The 13 Kitsune types in Japanese folklore are linked to elements: Celestial (Tengoku), Wind (Kaze), Spirit (Seishin), Darkness (Kukan/Void), Fire (Kasai), Earth (Chikyu), River (Kawa), Ocean (Umi), Forest (Mori), Mountain (Yama), Thunder (Sanda), Sound/Music (Ongaku), and Time (Jikan). Each elemental connection influences the fox's temperament, with benevolent ones (Zenko) often serving deities like Inari, and trickster or malevolent ones (Yako) like the Void Kitsune (Nogitsune) causing mischief.
Although there are about 13 different types of kitsune, based on the elements, we can classify the beast as either good or evil. The good kitsune is called zenko and the evil one is nogitsune.
We've been told in the show that there are 13 types of Kitsune within the TW Universe which are most likely the same 13 known in Japanese mythology/folklore. They are: Wind, Earth, Fire, River, Heaven, Thunder, Mountain, Void/Nogitsune, Spirit, Time, Forest, Ocean, and Music.
Tails represent power of a kitsune, the more tails a kitsune has, the more powerful it is. A Nine Tailed Kitsune has to live for 1000 years to have 9 tails and that's the maximum number of tails a kitsune can have. They grow a new tail every 100 years and are considered the most powerful type of fox spirit.
You'd be hard pressed to find a male kitsune in the older tales, but kitsune can be both male and female, and in fact can take the form of either a man or a woman when changing to a human. Today, however, there are many stories of male kitsune, particularly in anime and manga.
Kitsune, the Legend
Kitsune have a range of magical powers that can be wielded for good or for evil: mind-control, human possession and even affecting the weather. Kitsune are the only yokai in Japanese folklore who fall in love and get married, which typically results in a Fox's Wedding, or Kitsune no Yomeiri,.
In Japanese folklore, Kitsune have as many as nine tails (but this is derived straight from Chinese classics, as explained below). Generally, a greater number of tails indicates an older and more powerful Kitsune; in fact, some folktales say that a fox will only grow additional tails after it has lived 100 years.
9-tailed fox "Kyuubi no kitsune" (九尾 の 狐) and changes its color to white or gold. "Kyuubi no kitsune", the thousand-year-old fox, has divine status and can see and hear all things happening in the world. It can also emit fire, known as "kitsune-bi", from its mouth or tail.
What's stronger, a kitsune or a dragon? I'd go with the dragon more times than not. Kitsune, like many Yōkai, tend to be quite physical entities not extraneous to injuries from fight with common humans or soldiers. And when they feel like to be a danger, usually they target individuals to possess or to play tricks on.
The nine-tailed fox is supposedly so powerful that they can see and hear anything happening anywhere. They also have an infinite amount of wisdom. Even better, if they live 1000 years, they will turn white or gold in color and become a tenko, a heavenly fox who ascends to heaven.
