While healthy adult rhinos have few natural predators due to their size and strength (mainly only elephants and humans), lions, crocodiles, and tigers can sometimes take down calves or vulnerable adults, often in groups or through ambush; a hippopotamus might also challenge a rhino, but rhinos usually win, and surprisingly, small animals like deer can even act aggressively towards them.
Rhinos Face Many Threats
Threats include habitat loss, encroachment by people, and fragmented populations that inhibit breeding, however, poaching remains the largest threat to their survival.
Lions are the rhinos natural predator and even they rarely attack adults. Rhino calves are mainly targeted by lions but some weak, injured and old adults have been reportedly killed by the felines. Below I will detail some reported cases in which rhinos were killed. ``Battle of the youngsters!''
The two species most often reported to prey upon rhinos – usually young rhinos – are lions in Africa and tigers in Asia. However, leopards, hyenas, wild dogs and Nile crocodiles are also known to kill African rhino calves on occasion. By far, though, people are rhinos' #1 enemy.
A pride of lions won't target a fully grown rhino. The risk of injury and the amount of energy it would require to bring down such a large animal make it not worth the kill for the lion. But that doesn't mean that lions always leave rhinos alone. Lions may target rhino babies and old, weak, or injured rhinos.
Despite lacking a horn, its sharp teeth and unpredictable behavior make it lethal. Hippos kill more people each year than rhinos. But the rhino's large horn and powerful build shouldn't be underestimated, especially in close quarters. Both animals are among the most dangerous animals on land.
The total global population of rhinos is approximately 26,700. The 2025 numbers, collected and provided by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, indicate a gain of roughly 430 rhinos globally since the last official count in 2022, when there were about 26,270 rhinos.
We'll stick with the tigers, hippos and crocs, thanks – so here's our top twelve of the world's deadliest animals.
A single blow from an elephant's tusks or a rhino's horn could seriously hurt or even kill a lion. For lions, it's not worth the risk of taking on such huge animals. Even though lions are brave hunters, they use their intelligence to avoid danger.
Facing off against Spider-Man, Rhino easily overpowered the web-slinger with his reliance on brute force. However, the crafty hero quickly identified the Rhino's primary weakness, that he would charge in one direction without the ability to change course.
The Hippopotamus is the third largest land animal, after the elephant and white rhino. The average weight for adult males hippos ranges from 1,500–1,800 kg with the females smaller at an average weight between 1,300–1,500 kg.
PERHAPS THEIR ONLY WEAKNESS IS POOR EYESIGHT. BUT ADULT RHINOS HAVE FEW NATURAL PREDATORS, AND THEY'RE WELL PROTECTED BY THAT FANTASTIC HORN. IT CAN GROW THREE INCHES A YEAR.
As of March 2018, there are only two rhinos of the northern white rhino left, both of which are female. They live in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya and are protected round-the-clock by armed guards. Their near extinction is due to decades of rampant poaching for rhino horn.
According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), here are just a few of the favorite animals that are threatened with extinction.
While they're not actually dinosaurs, this nickname captures the essence of their ancient legacy. Rhinos, or rhinoceroses, are ungulates (hoofed mammals), whereas dinosaurs were reptiles known as archosaurs. Except for modern birds, dinosaurs went extinct around 65 million years ago.
Another key reason why lions do not eat hyenas is the diet that hyenas consume. Hyenas are notorious scavengers, often feasting on rotting carcasses, decomposing flesh, and even bones. Their strong digestive systems allow them to consume and process food that would make other animals sick.
Homosexuality is common among lions as well. Two to four males often form what is known as a coalition, where they work together to court female lions. They depend on each other to fend off other coalitions. To ensure loyalty, male lions strengthen their bonds by having sex with each other.
Rhinoceroses are animals that appear in The Lion King franchise.
Mosquitos are by far the deadliest creature in the world when it comes to annual human deaths, causing around one million deaths per year, compared to 100,000 deaths from snakes and 250 from lions.
