In a way each member of the trio represents a Gryffindor who could have been one of the other houses. Harry could have been a Slytherin, Hermione could have been Ravenclaw, Ron could have been Hufflepuff.
As for Ron, Hufflepuff is probably the worst house for him. He's not hard-working (unless he really has to be), particularly tolerant (look at his treatment of Krum, for instance), or patient (see the first half of Deathly Hallows).

Whether it's the name or the house traits themselves, Hufflepuffs tend to be looked down upon or easily dismissed.
