Isobel Flemming was the wife of Alaric Saltzman and the biological mother of Elena Gilbert. She was good friends with her ancestor Katherine Pierce, a vampire she often conspired with. When Isobel was still in high school, she met John Gilbert and became pregnant with Elena.
In Best Served Cold, it is revealed that they are engaged to each other in the future. In the present, it is revealed by Valerie that the Gemini Coven wanted to protect Jo and Alaric's twins during Kai's attack at their wedding. They cast a spell that allowed Caroline to become pregnant with the twins.

In the season four finale of The Vampire Diaries, Graduation, Katherine slept with Niklaus Mikaelson and conceived her daughter, Adyelya.

Getting the cure sucked out of you does. When Damon drank the cure from Elena, she basically aged the few years that she was a vampire for. If anyone had drained Damon's blood after he took the cure, he would have aged and died like Katherine did.
When Katherine had the cure in her blood, Nadia told her that Silas would need to drink “every last drop” of her blood to be cured. Silas did that, which caused Katherine to start aging, making up for the extra 500-ish years that she was immortal.
