001, or +1 is the telephone calling code of North America; which includes Canada, the United States and the Caribbean.

The countries that were most influential in the telecommunications union, combined with those who had the largest population, were given the shortest and thus the simplest codes to enter. Therefore, it may not be surprising that the US and Canada received the single-digit country code +1.
COUNTRY dialling codes were agreed in the early 1960s by the International Telecoms Union (a club of each country's network providers). In the days of mechanical telephone exchanges, it was convenient to split the world into broad areas: 1 for USA, 2 for Africa, 3 and 4 for Europe, etc.

Format North American phone numbers
To format a real phone number in the US, Canada, and other NANP (North American Numbering Plan) countries, enclose the area code in parentheses, and then hyphenate the three-digit exchange code with the four-digit number.
