Despite not actually being a princess per se, like Mulan she was given an honorary Princess title. Per Disney lore, this was because she committed an act of bravery worthy of a princess, but in reality, it was so the Mouse House could add a popular character to its lucrative line of toys.

Shang and Mulan are both not royalty, just high-ranking members of the Imperial Army. This means that Mulan is not technically a princess, yet she is considered one when Disney lists their princesses.

In Barrie's play and his novel, Tink tried to communicate her love to Peter, but it was unrequited, too mature an emotion for the boy who never wanted to grow up. The implied romance was more emphatic, but the visual medium of the animated movie allowed it to be more visceral.

The Disney Princesses are a magical group, but ultimately they boil down to a merchandise and film franchise from a business perspective. Frozen is its own merchandise and film franchise. Basically, Anna and Elsa aren't princesses because they're plenty profitable on their own!
The easiest answer for why the Frozen women don't count is simply that Elsa is a queen in the first movie, and gives up her crown for Anna to take over in Frozen 2. They are therefore Queens and not Princesses. But, as we've seen, royalty isn't even a condition of entry, so that alone shouldn't rule them out.

1937: Snow White
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out in 1937, debuting the very first Disney princess with Snow White herself. Voiced by Adriana Caselotti, she's incredibly of her time (i.e. dated af).

Faydust Bell the daughter of Tinkerbell from Neverland in a story named Peterpan. She is the only child of Tinkerbell.
Canonically, Elsa of Arendelle, who sits upon the tiny northern kingdom's throne at the end of Frozen, is not queer. Canonically, she is not romantically interested in anybody. And lest you wonder if that description means Elsa is asexual or aromantic, neither of those qualities is canon either.
Elsa's condition, which is triggered by fear and anxiety, is representative of not only physical but also mental and cognitive disability, as many viewers have noted. The mishandling of Elsa's condition by her parents resonates especially with those who live with anxiety and depression.

Alice ('Alice In Wonderland')
Other than being human, Alice is not royal and does not perform any prominent acts of heroism throughout the film, but her closeness to the title allows her to often be mistaken for a true Disney Princess.

It's kind of weird for this character to be interested in Peter Pan and to be attracted to him, as she is always placed with an adult body and not a child. There were never used plans for this character to appear in the cartoon A Kind of Magic, where it would be established that she was an adult and Peter Pan a child.
Periwinkle is a Frost Fairy who lives in the Winter Woods. She learns that Tinker Bell is her sister when their wings both glow.
