The first person in the world to get a heart transplant from a genetically-modified pig has died. David Bennett, who had terminal heart disease, survived for two months following the surgery in the US.
Editor's Note (11/1/23): Pig heart transplant recipient Lawrence Faucette died on October 30, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where Faucette received the surgery and posttransplant care. The medical team reported that Faucette showed signs of organ rejection.
He was the first patient to have a xenotransplantation with a genetically modified heart. On January 7, 2022, aged 57, he received the heart of a gene-edited pig. He was born in Maryland. Bennett died in Baltimore, Maryland on March 8, 2022, at the age of 57.
