The relationship between Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, and Daphne Bridgerton in season one of Bridgerton is widely considered by critics and viewers to be toxic and problematic. Their dynamic is frequently debated online, with many acknowledging its entertainment value but recognizing the unhealthy and abusive behaviors portrayed.
In the final episode, a man and a woman are fully nude and have an intimate moment, but they're implied to have finished having sex, the woman's breasts and buttocks are exposed, the man's bare hip is briefly seen. A man goes to a brothel. He is seen kissing two women.
Dynevor explained her absence from the show over a year before Bridgerton season 3 premiered. She told Variety in January 2023 that her work with Daphne is done...for now. “I did my two seasons,” she said. “I've done what I wanted to do with that character, and she had a great arc.
Simon clearly loved Daphne. He tried to set her free, to alienate her enough to drive her away so that she could be with the Prince. He was willing to sacrifice his life rather than marry her even though he loved her. Daphne did not love the Prince. She barely liked him.
Because Bridgerton's narrative does not acknowledge racial differences, racism is also erased. This is largely due to the producers' decision to deviate from historical accuracy because they “weren't interested in being a history lesson or a documentary” (Van Dusen qtd. in Westenfeld, 2021).
In Bridgerton Season 3, the major gender swap was Francesca Bridgerton's future love interest, Michael Stirling, who was changed to Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza, setting up a significant queer storyline for Francesca in future seasons, a departure from Julia Quinn's books where Michael is a male cousin.
£10,000 in Bridgerton's Regency era (around 1815) is worth well over £1 million today, with estimates placing it around £1.1 million to £1.2 million ($1.4 million+) in modern currency, representing significant wealth, equivalent to millions in buying power, a fact highlighted by Penelope Featherington's substantial hidden fortune as Lady Whistledown, which shocked the other characters.

No, Daphne and Simon do not divorce in the Bridgerton books or the show; they overcome their conflicts, get married, and have a happy family, though Simon's absence in later seasons made their separation seem possible to some viewers, they remain together in the source material, with five children.
Bagwell, a scholar, and became smitten with him. He was a second son and didn't have much income, but Edwina still fell in love with him. Luckily, Kate married Anthony, which allowed both her and Mary to be taken care of, and Edwina married Mr. Bagwell with the blessing of her family.
Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) has been what we might call queer-adjacent since season one, primarily through his dalliances with London's sexually liberated underground party scene.
She was late and she thought she was pregnant. She was disappointed and sad that her periods came. In the show she just got her period. The reason she was so upset is because her and Simon agreed they would live apart if there was no baby that resulted from when Daphne made him *bloop* inside her.
The Netflix hit series Bridgerton explores one family's adventures, and because of their size, the show's cast is bound to see actors leave now and then. With a show that's going to span eight seasons if done in full, certain characters are going to become less relevant as the plot moves on.
As many series fans will agree, the first season was definitely spicier as there were more steamy scenes in the show's first outing. That's not to say season 2 is a wholly safe-for-work affair as that season still had some memorable moments that are in this list.
And that bad comes in episode 6's "Swish." Some may associate this particular episode with Daphne (played by Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon's shameless romps on every surface of Hastings House. But it's the controversial sex scene towards the end of the 57-minute mark that has people talking.
However, Simon is adamant about never marrying and having children. Why is this so? Ultimately, he's not half the rake that Daphne suspects him to be. The answer lies in a vow that Simon makes to his father to never sire an heir for the Hastings line.
Sir Phillip Crane eventually marries Eloise Bridgerton in the Books.
Duchess Daphne and Duke Simon Basset
Naturally, Daphne and Simon do not confess their love for each other until after the wedding. And they do not see eye to eye on family and the longevity of their relationship until the Season 1 finale. They are now proud parents and the stewards of Clyvedon.
So in the books she came out at 17/18 but didn't marry Simon until she was 21 (in her third season of being out in society). In the film she was 21 and she made her debut that year and then married Simon.
Through the housekeeper's vague insinuations Daphne also realizes that Simon has been purposefully preventing her from having children by pulling out as they have sex and is not infertile as she was led to believe.
Daphne Bridgerton is 21 when she makes her debut in British society. By season three, she's 23.
People don't realize that Penelope is RICH! She wrote Lady Whistledown for 12 years. She took out one lump sum 4 years in, gave some to charity, and STILL had $8,246 in the bank! $8,246 in 1824= $1,134,534.53 in 2024 (UK money£)
The failure of season three is almost entirely a failure of writing. I say almost entirely because the editing and cinematography do have a bit to answer for. Some of the shot changes were choppy enough to make me seasick and, even to my inexpert eye, the color balance was way off in some scenes.
