Myth: Tinnitus is always chronic and permanent. Fact: Tinnitus can be chronic or temporary. Tinnitus isn't always a long-term symptom. People often experience temporary tinnitus as the result of a one-time exposure to loud noise.
While it has no clear cure or cause, it affects millions of people in the world on some level and can be challenging to cope with. Thankfully, it's entirely possible to live a normal life even with tinnitus.
Surveys show that around 5% of all adults experience permanent tinnitus.
While there's no cure for chronic tinnitus, it often becomes less noticeable and more manageable over time. You can help ease the symptoms by educating yourself about the condition — for example, understanding that it's not dangerous. There are also several ways to help tune out the noise and minimize its impact.
Tinnitus is usually caused by an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, an ear injury or a problem with the circulatory system. For many people, tinnitus improves with treatment of the underlying cause or with other treatments that reduce or mask the noise, making tinnitus less noticeable.
It is often suggested that tinnitus remits especially in its acute presentation3,22. Our results suggest that, albeit rare, tinnitus may also disappear in chronic patients suffering from the condition for years or even decades.
The Cause of Your Tinnitus is Significant

Will my tinnitus ever go away? The greatest majority of new tinnitus cases will resolve within 6-12 months of onset. If your tinnitus is more longstanding, it is likely that you will hear it less over time, even if it persists beyond this period.
For some people, the problem will last a matter of hours, and for other people it will last a few days. If you were exposed to a loud noise and it was a one-off occurrence, the problem will probably clear itself up within a few days.
There is no cure for tinnitus, and many people like Anna suffer for years. Tinnitus is not its own condition but rather a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as hearing loss from age or noise exposure, Meniere's disease, high blood pressure or other disease of the ear related to medications.
While tinnitus can be caused by conditions that require medical attention, it is often a condition that is not medically serious. However, the distress and anxiety it produces can often disrupt people's lives.
If you experience your tinnitus in short bursts, maybe only a few minutes each, there's a good chance that it will fade over time. However, if it has been going on for months or even years, then it's likely that the condition is permanent. It does still depend on the cause though.
Tinnitus can affect people of all ages, including children, but is more common in people aged over 65.
Tinnitus can't be cured. But tinnitus usually doesn't continue forever. There will be a large number of factors that will establish how long your tinnitus will stick around, including the primary cause of your tinnitus and your general hearing health.
In many cases, tinnitus dissipates on its own regardless of the cause. However, that doesn't mean you should wait weeks, months, or even years for your tinnitus to disappear. If your tinnitus continues for more than a couple of weeks and negatively affects your quality of life, consult an audiologist.
You may need to see your doctor if: You have tinnitus that sounds like a heartbeat (pulsatile tinnitus) You also have dizziness, vertigo, or hearing loss. Your tinnitus comes on suddenly.
Tinnitus exercises
Inhale and tighten only the muscles you are concentrating on for 8 seconds. Release them by suddenly letting go. Let the tightness and pain flow out of the muscles while you slowly exhale. Continue this progression systematically from your head down to the feet.
A recent survey by the Centers for Disease Control found that many Americans have hearing loss, even in their 20s, and most don't even know it. The study showed that around 20% of people in their 20s already have some amount of permanent hearing loss or tinnitus, and this hearing loss will only get worse with time.
An MRI scan may reveal a growth or tumor near the ear or the eighth cranial nerve that could be causing tinnitus. Imaging tests can also help doctors evaluate pulsatile tinnitus. They can show changes in the blood vessels near the ears and determine whether an underlying medical condition is causing symptoms.
If you experience the following tinnitus symptoms, you should see an otolaryngologist (ENT doctor) and audiologist: When the tinnitus is only in one ear. When the sound is affecting your quality of life. When the sound starts suddenly or changes in volume or duration.
Most describe it as ringing in the ears, but it can also sound like a pulsing noise, a dial tone, whistling, or buzzing. Depending on the intensity, ringing in the ears may seem harmless. But tinnitus shouldn't always be disregarded. Something more serious might be the underlying cause of these noises.
But, if you are experiencing a long-term condition affecting the ear, such as Meniere's disease, your tinnitus may be more long-lasting or even permanent. If your tinnitus is caused by the natural loss of hearing that's common with aging, then it may also be permanent.
