Meat isn't universally bad for Crohn's, but fatty, processed, and red meats often worsen symptoms, while lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs) are crucial for healing during flares; focus on low-fat options and cook simply, trimming visible fat, as fat digestion is harder with Crohn's.
In a study from the IBD Partners cohort, red meat was one of the foods that patients with CD reported to worsen symptoms and it was commonly avoided (16).
The exact cause of Crohn's disease is not clear. It is probably a combination of genetics, the immune system, and something in the environment that triggers inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Diet and stress may make symptoms worse, but probably don't cause the condition.
Increase protein:
Since protein needs increase during active disease, it's also helpful to focus on consuming protein-containing foods throughout the day. Some examples of foods containing protein are chicken, tofu, fish, turkey, eggs, yogurt, beans, chia seeds, and nut butters.
It's probably not a surprise that high-fat fried foods like fries, creamy sauces, and greasy cheeseburgers can be problematic. For those with Crohn's, this fat is not well absorbed and can lead to painful cramping and diarrhea.

Red meat, like beef or pork, can be difficult to digest for people of any age, but it may become more taxing as we get older. The body requires more digestive enzymes to break down red meat, which is naturally tough and protein-rich.
Foods that can be inflammatory - Highly processed foods, like corn chips, fried foods and too much red meat, sugar, wheat, rye and barley in people with gluten allergies of celiac disease.
Most fatalities associated with Crohn's disease are related to complications like perforation, sepsis, or thromboembolic events, rather than the disease itself.

Trigger: Fatty Red Meat
There's not enough evidence to tie red meat consumption in general to Crohn's flares. But the experts we spoke with did recommend avoiding fatty red meats like hamburgers, bacon, or pork belly, since again, high-fat foods can worsen both diarrhea and constipation.
Although ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are both long-term, inflammatory conditions that affect the digestive tract, ulcerative colitis (UC) may be considered “worse” because surgery may be required earlier and, in certain circumstances, more urgently, in people with severe and extensive UC.

Red and Processed Meats: As we noted above, red meats (like beef, pork, and lamb) and processed meats (such as hot dogs, sausage, and lunch meats) have all been shown to raise colorectal cancer risk, as can the chemicals created from grilling, frying, or broiling them.

Since we do not know what causes Crohn's and colitis, there is no known cure – yet. We do know that your diet did not cause inflammatory bowel disease, nor will a “miracle diet” cure it.
