Male circumcision trends vary significantly by region: rates are generally decreasing in Western countries like the US, Australia, UK, and Canada, despite medical body recommendations for benefits, largely due to changing cultural views, cost barriers (Medicaid cuts), and ethnic shifts. Conversely, in some African nations, demand is rising due to HIV prevention efforts, while rates remain high or fluctuate based on culture, religion, and access globally.
However, a new study by researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health reveals that neonatal male circumcision (NMC) rates in the United States declined nearly 5% in the 10 years following the American Academy of Pediatrics statement in favor of the practice.
A common reason for parents to not circumcise their baby is their wish for the child to choose when they are older, reflecting current ethical debates on bodily autonomy. Other reasons include concerns about possible safety, risk of bleeding or infection, pain, later sexual function, or other mild complications.
In 2016, the global prevalence of circumcision was rising, predominantly due to the HIV/AIDS programs in Africa and a higher fertility rate among countries where the procedure is commonly performed.
Male circumcision is one of the most common procedures in the world. Approximately 40% of the worldwide male population is circumcised, and the prevalence is even higher among male children born in the United States [1,2].
In Japan, routine male circumcision has never been implemented for newborns and children, and adult males are mostly circumcised at aesthetic clinics. However, media reports indicate a trend of Japanese mothers willing to have their sons circumcised.
In many European countries, nonreligious circumcision is almost unheard of. Even in the United States — the outlier of the Western world, where nearly 80% of men are circumcised — more parents are choosing to leave their newborn boys intact.
Credible research shows that most women prefer the appearance of the circumcised penis. They also prefer it for sexual activity. Hygiene is one reason; increased contact of the penis with the vaginal wall, and thus greater stimulation, are others.
Christianity and circumcision
In the Old Testament circumcision is clearly defined as a covenant between God and all Jewish males. Circumcision is not laid down as a requirement in the New Testament. Instead, Christians are urged to be "circumcised of the heart" by trusting in Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross.
The penis starts developing between the ages of 10 and 14 under the influence of growth hormones. You need to adapt to these changes to transition into adulthood. The penis will stop developing between the ages of 16 and 21 when it has reached its standard size. The penis changes both in size and function.

In most Indian communities, the major determinant of male circumcision is religion: Muslims practice male circumcision for cultural reasons, while the predominantly Hindu population does not. For this reason, male circumcision is often considered a marker of religious identity.

The estimate indicates that circumcision is higher among countries where the Muslim or Jewish faith are commonplace, such as Iran (100 per cent), Iraq (99 per cent), West Bank (99 per cent), Yemen (99 per cent), Indonesia (93 per cent), Syria (93 per cent), and Israel (92 per cent).
Similarly, when compared with the control group, the circumcised men reported significantly improved IELT, control over ejaculation, and satisfaction with sexual intercourse (P < 0.001 for all).
In the present physician survey, the most common reasons neonatal circumcision was not offered included the institution was not a birth hospital, the procedure was not covered by insurance, and low insurance reimbursement.
For those circumcised (n = 91), the median regret score was 0 (IQR 0–25). For those uncircumcised (n = 28), median regret score was 0 (IQR 0–24). Overall, 55% of both groups reported no regret (DRS = 0), 24% had low-mild regret (DRS 5–25), and 21% yielded moderate-strong regret (DRS 30–100).
Traditionally, Zoroastrians do not practice circumcision. Circumcision is not required in Yazidism, but is practised by some Yazidis due to regional customs. Circumcision is forbidden in Mandaeism, and the sign of the Jews given to Abraham by God, circumcision, is considered abhorrent.
Islam is the largest religious group to practice male circumcision. As an Abrahamic faith, Islamic people practice circumcision as a confirmation of their relationship with God, and the practice is also known as 'tahera', meaning purification.

For uncircumcised male adult patients, the foreskin usually appears slightly bulkier when flaccid, but during an erection, it naturally retracts and almost seems invisible. There really is not a significant penis size difference in the flaccid state since the foreskin is simply a thin layer of tissue.
Many people with an uncircumcised penis experience no problems as a result. Most of the complications that arise from having an uncircumcised penis are avoidable through practicing good hygiene. Some tips include: cleaning under the foreskin every day with warm water.
Eventually, the foreskin should be retracted far enough during urination to see the meatus (the hole where the urine comes from). This prevents urine from building up beneath the foreskin and possibly causing an infection. As long as the foreskin doesn't easily retract, only the outside needs to be cleaned.
The judges decided that the circumcision amounted to bodily injury. “The fundamental right of the child to bodily integrity outweighed the fundamental rights of the parents”, the court judged.
Australia has seen a decrease in circumcision rates over the last 70 years or so. Back in the 1950s, roughly 80 per cent of Australian men and boys were circumcised. That rate has steadily decreased and now, around 20 per cent of Australian newborns are circumcised.
The NHS refused to fund the procedure due to beliefs that it had no medical benefit in the majority of cases. Findings from a survey carried out in 2000 showed that between 10-20% of British males reported being circumcised.
