While playing tug of war, your dog might get excited and begin growling. This is normal, as the game itself is predatory behavior. However, it is important to keep your dog from becoming overly excited or aggressive, and take breaks to keep the game from getting out of control.
For most dogs, growling is part of play and not a reason to worry. As long as your dog's tail is wagging and he's not showing any signs of aggression, he's most likely playing.
It is also a great way to burn off excess energy and keep your dog physically and mentally stimulated. By letting your dog “win” during a game of tug, you aren't letting them dominate you. Instead, you're nurturing a solid rapport and teaching them that engaging with you is fun and rewarding.
Additionally, people should always take care not to tug too hard on their dog's teeth because it can cause injury. Your dog is a puppy. Tug-of-war should be avoided with puppies because their teeth, mouths, and jaws, are still growing and changing. Tugging too much can cause jaw or bite problems.
It plays into their prey drive instinct - Tugging lets dogs practice capturing their prey and keeping it away from other predators trying to steal their prize. It's a functional game, meaning that although your dog knows they're playing and having fun, they're practicing skills.
The Growl: Dogs do growl while playing, but there are two ways to tell different growls apart. An aggressive growl will be accompanied by snarling and snapping, while a playful growl is just a sound, accompanied by relaxed body movements (no tension).
Canine possession aggression is also sometimes referred to as "food aggression" or "resource guarding." If your dog has this problem, it may growl, snap, or bite to protect a resource, such as food, toys, beds, or other objects, from being taken away by another dog or person.
When dogs are play growling, there's no need to worry. However, if you observe that the growls are getting more intense, you may simply wish to stop play for a while until things calm down before resuming. Take a break. If your dog is playing with another dog, separate them for a few minutes.

Signs of dominant behavior in dogs:

Dogs that are playing may roll on their backs or otherwise give their play partner the upper hand for a bit. But if you're seeing all pursuit, no give and take… if one dog is doing all the chasing and not letting the other get away—or body slamming—that's moving into aggressive territory.
Most dogs assume a neutral or submissive role toward people, but some dogs will challenge their owners for dominance. A dominant dog may stare, bark, growl, snap, or even bite when you give him a command or ask him to give up a toy, treat, or resting place.

The key is to make sure both dogs are engaging at similar levels and do not look stressed. If both dogs are play bowing, bouncy, or seem to exaggerate their movements and vocalizations, it's likely a play session. Another good indication of play is sneezing.
Growling during play does not mean your dog is aggressive. It simply means they're having a great time. Your dog might even growl during a particularly pleasing cuddle or patting session. Many dogs growl talk to communicate contentment or as a greeting.
Dogs don't shake hands like people do, they use their nose to say hello. So, hold your hand in a fist so they can approach and sniff if they choose. Don't thrust your hand at the dog. They can smell you just fine from a distance, and the sudden movement could startle them.
If your dog follows you everywhere then it's a sign that they trust and love you and that you make them feel safe. Following you very closely can be a sign that they're bored, they want something, they're feeling scared or are just being nosy.
