Because of these additional areas of study, many of which are almost limitless in their scope (take the weather, for instance - one can spend an entire career attempting to accurately guess its next move), learning to fly is a far more involved and in depth process than learning to drive.
Driving vs. Flying By the Numbers
The overall fatality risk is 0.23% — you would need to fly every day for more than 10,000 years to be in a fatal plane crash. On the other hand, the chances of dying in a car collision are about 1 in 101, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
If you are an aspiring pilot, it is understandable if you are afraid of how difficult flying an aeroplane may be. From the outside, flying an aircraft looks like an overwhelmingly difficult job. However, once you get into the pilot's seat, you realise it's not much different from learning how to drive a car.
Training typically takes six to 12 months, with a minimum of 40 logged flying hours. Get certified as a private pilot before getting your commercial pilot certificate. Private pilots learn to maneuver a single-engine airplane without assistance from a copilot.
