A good follow up, if not perfect. Definitely worth investing in if a fan of either original series - or if DBZ left you begging for more - which it did for many people.
It ended because interest in the franchise had been waning since the Buu arc. Merchandise sales had stagnated and weren't going anywhere while GT was airing so Toei decided to come up with an ending and bring the series to a close.
Series History
Since Dragon Ball GT was not based on the manga, no filler was required. As a result, four entire sagas (the Black Star Dragon Ball Saga, the Baby Saga, the Super 17 Saga, and the Shadow Dragon Saga) were completed in only 64 episodes.
In a recent interview with Toriyama, he said he considers Super to be a "casual" continuation to his original story. Back in the early 2000's, he said he considered GT to be a "grand side story" to his original story.

Goku was never dumb in Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z. He was naïve but was always quick to learn new things. The dude was an orphan from the mountains who had never seen another person besides his grandma and still assimilated to living in the city and using machines and capsules and such.
Unrelated to Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga, Dragon Ball GT is a non-canon entry in the Dragon Ball universe. You can completely skip the entire 64-episode series because it is filler and has no bearing on the main story. Whether you choose to watch the entire thing or fast-forward is entirely up to you.
Upon arriving on Planet M-2, Giru "betrays" Trunks, Goku, and Pan, though he is actually pretending, as ordered by Trunks. Giru was initially programmed to find and lure the Saiyans to the planet in order to use their DNA, but due to a memory failure, he forgot the entire thing until the team nears Planet M-2.

It feels like Daima is an attempt at a sort of “do-over” for Dragon Ball GT, with slightly tweaked parameters. For one thing, we know that Dragon Ball Daima WILL be canon. So it's no promo anime that stands on its own.
