Breast reduction is a major surgery with potential risks and complications. The surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia and you will be asleep during the procedure. The surgery involves removing extra fat, breast glandular tissues, and skin. It also includes reshaping the rest of the breast tissue.
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is major surgery. During the procedure, the doctor may reduce the breasts' size by removing glandular tissue, fat, and excess skin. Before going ahead with breast reduction surgery, it is important to know general facts about the procedure.
Breast reduction surgery carries certain risks. These include complications that may occur with any surgical procedure, such as risk of infection of the surgical wound, blood clots, and bleeding. Other potential complications specific to breast reduction surgery include: Breasts may end up differing in size and shape.
Is breast cancer surgery a major surgery? Some types are and some aren't. For example, sentinel node biopsy and lumpectomy are relatively minor procedures by themselves. But if you have them both at the same time, your surgery and recovery will be longer.
Mastectomy complications can develop within days or weeks after surgery, and sometimes later. Early complications from the procedure can include: Surgical wound infection: Surgeons are careful to prevent this. The risk is less than 1%.
A mastectomy takes about one to three hours. You will be under general anesthesia (completely asleep) throughout the procedure. The surgeon makes an incision in your breast to remove the tissue, which will be analyzed by a pathologist.
Recovery from breast reduction surgery may take a while.
Giving yourself time to heal is important. It can take as long as eight to 12 weeks to fully recover and resume regular activities. But the recovery process differs depending on your health, procedure and the surgeon who performs it.
Deciding On the Ideal Time For Breast Implants
As we mentioned earlier, the FDA states you should be at least 18 for saline implants and 22 for silicone breast implants. Generally, there are several excellent reasons to wait until your breasts are mature before you consider implants so your results age gracefully.
A mastectomy usually takes about an hour and a half. A double mastectomy can take around 3 hours. It can take longer if you're having breast reconstruction surgery at the same time.
Sub-specialties within general surgery include: breast surgery – assessment of breast symptoms, breast cancer surgery and breast reconstructive surgery where a plastic surgeon is not needed.
In general, the surgery takes about three to four hours. Removing excess breast volume (fat and glandular tissue), creating an aesthetic contour and closing the wound to minimize scarring can take additional time in some patients. Patients with extremely large breasts may require more complex surgery.
Typically, the most common breast implant size ranges between 300cc and 500cc. 400cc tends to be the single most common implant.
Most of our patients report experiencing soreness, tenderness, and a sensation of tightness around the chest area for a few days following surgery. They typically describe the pain as more of a feeling of heaviness or dull soreness rather than sharp or intense pain.
Breast reduction risks can include:
Blood clots. Breast asymmetry. Breast contour and shape irregularities. Changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent.
Major surgery usually means staying in the hospital afterward and getting general anesthesia. Minor surgery is often an outpatient procedure. That means you go home the same day. It may involve local or regional anesthesia.
Round is the most common implant shape and creates a very natural looking result, both when standing and lying down. The saline or silicone inside of a round implant settles when standing, creating a natural breast shape that is wider at the bottom, thinner at the top.
You may be able to go home on the same day as the operation, especially if you had no lymph nodes removed, only sentinel lymph nodes removed, no reconstruction, or immediate reconstruction with a tissue expander or breast implant. Otherwise, you can expect to stay in the hospital for an average of three days or less.
Summary: The answer to the question “How many cup sizes can I go down with a breast reduction?” is: as small as the patient would like, provided there is enough breast tissue to support the functions of the nipples.
If you need radiation therapy after surgery, it is usually not started until after your breast heals from surgery. This usually takes 3 to 4 weeks. It can take longer if you get an infection or have problems healing. Research shows that radiation therapy may be given up to 12 weeks after surgery.
Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has undergone a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer. The 37-year-old mother of six has explained her reasons for having the surgery in the New York Times. She said her doctors estimated she had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer.
The Golden Ratio, represents a mathematical ratio of 1:1.618, known as 'phi,' so you can understand the ideal breast proportions. Studies from cosmetic surgeons have shown that the ideal breast proportion is 45:55, where 45 percent of the breast should be above the nipple, and 55 percent below the nipple.
Medical Necessity
A determination that a service or procedure is needed to treat a medical condition, not for cosmetic reasons. Insurance will typically cover breast reduction if it can be shown to alleviate medical issues such as chronic pain or posture problems.
The average pain score of patients having a breast reduction is 3.3 on a scale of 1–10, compared to 5.9/10 for patients having a breast augmentation.
However, short, gentle walks around your home are encouraged to promote blood circulation and prevent blood clots. 2-3 Weeks Post-Surgery: After about 2-3 weeks, you may be able to start incorporating light exercises into your routine. This could include longer walks, gentle stretching, and lower body exercises.
This is due to the body sending more white blood cells and proteins to the area to promote healing - so it's actually quite important to be a little bloated! However, if you find your belly still isn't back to 'normal' months after your procedure, it might be because your proportions aren't what they once were.
