Alchemy itself isn't inherently illegal today, but historical laws, like England's 1404 Act Against Multipliers, banned creating gold to protect currency, and practicing it with fraudulent intent (scams) was, and still is, illegal. While ancient alchemy was a precursor to chemistry, attempting to turn lead into gold today is scientifically impossible, but modern attempts at such fraud could lead to prosecution for deception or counterfeiting.
