Released in October 2021, the third-generation AirPods have been in Apple's product lineup for over a year, but the AirPods are not updated very often.
Most recently, reliable industry insider Ming-Chi Kuo has stated that the next-gen Apple AirPods will come in late 2024 or early 2025, so the current generation is here to stay for a while.
The new AirPods Pro 2 are expected to go on sale in the second or third quarter of 2023. It's unclear whether the Type-C connector will be added to the AirPods 2 and 3. With the iPhone 15 series, Apple is also expected to switch to a Type-C charging port.
AirPods 3 are available in white and have only one case option. They cost $179 but can often be found discounted by official retailers.
On the downside, some reviewers still missed the silicone tips and the Active Noise Cancellation feature available in the AirPods Pro, but it's clear that these new AirPods are worth checking out, especially at the $179 price point.

We could be waiting until 2024 for an update to the AirPods, although there could be an even longer wait if Kuo is correct and the new Max and Lite models won't launch until 2024 or 2025. We could see an update to the 3rd-gen AirPods if Apple adds USB-C charging to the case.

Both earbuds should provide up to 6 hours of listening time, according to Apple's claims. But you'll get 5.5 hours of battery life when using spatial audio and head tracking on the AirPods Pro 2, while the AirPods 3 offer slightly shorter 5-hour battery life with that surround sound feature enabled.
