In most non-naval military or paramilitary organizations, the various grades of sergeant are non-commissioned officers (NCOs) ranking above privates and corporals, and below warrant officers and commissioned officers. The responsibilities of a sergeant differ from army to army.
An enlisted private is the lowest in the army ranks. A private can eventually advance from this junior position to a corporal. From there, there are many other advancements, including sergeant, lieutenant, captain, major, and colonel, until some reach a general officer ranking.
The top police ranking is colonel. Below colonel is the rank of lieutenant colonel, then major, captain, lieutenant, sergeant, trooper first class, and trooper.
Sergeant is a senior role of responsibility, promotion to which typically takes place after normally 12 years depending on ability. Sergeants typically are second in command of a troop or platoon of up to 40 soldiers, with the important responsibility for advising and assisting junior officers.
In the United States Army, sergeant is a more junior rank corresponding to a squad- (12 person) or platoon- (36 person) leader. More senior non-commissioned ranks are often variations on sergeant, for example staff sergeant, gunnery sergeant, master sergeant, first sergeant, and sergeant major.
Sergeant (E-5)
Although not the lowest level of rank where command is exercised, this level is the first at which enlisted soldiers are referred to as sergeant, and of all the grades of the NCO, this one, very possibly, has the greatest impact on the lower ranking-soldiers.
There are two paths to promotion to sergeant. One requires 36 months TIS and at least eight months TIG. The other requires 18 months TIS and six months TIG.
Sergeant (E-5)
They are often the lowest-level NCO leaders for junior enlisted ranks, leading them in individual training, personal appearance, cleanliness, and MOS competency. The pay grade for SGTs is E-5.
Luckily, all five branches of the armed forces have made it possible for an enlisted service member to become an officer. Although a service member can be promoted to warrant officer because of his technical expertise, someone who wants to become a commissioned officer must attend officer candidate school.
Sergeant First Class (SFC) is the seventh enlisted rank (E-7) in the U.S. Army, ranking above staff sergeant (E-6) and below master sergeant and first sergeant (E-8), and is the first non-commissioned officer rank designated as a senior non-commissioned officer (SNCO).
Sergeants are enlisted personnel, not commissioned officers. Sergeants are not saluted, either. In the movie Good Morning Vietnam, one of the characters called the sergeant “sir.” He angrily said “don't call me sir. I work for a living.”
A Police Sergeant is a first-line supervisor who plans, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of others. A Sergeant coordinates section activities, participates in police operations, and performs related work as required.

In many aspects, being a sergeant is both the hardest and the best job on the department. However, you are also free to “create” the direction you think the unit should go. You are now the mentor and coach to your officers. You are able to help them reach their goals and know you had a part in their successes.
Sergeants typically command a fire team of around five Soldiers. Sergeants oversee Soldiers in their daily tasks, and are expected to set a standard for lower-ranked Soldiers to live up to. A staff sergeant commands a squad (nine to 10 Soldiers).
Corporal is the fourth enlisted rank in the U.S. Marine Corps, ranking immediately above lance corporal and immediately below sergeant.
Lieutenant: Wearing a single gold or silver bar, a lieutenant supervises two to three or more sergeants. Lieutenants can supervise an entire watch shift in a police station or detective squad (narcotics, homicide, etc.)

To be promoted to Sergeant, soldiers must serve thirty-six months of service and months of time in grade; although, commanders can waive the requirement for time in service in light of consistent good performance of soldiers while serving in lower ranks.
Staff sergeant (SSG) is the E-6 rank in the United States Army, just above sergeant and below sergeant first class, and is a non-commissioned officer. Staff sergeants are generally placed in charge of squads, but can also act as platoon sergeants in the absence of a sergeant first class.
