PET scans and MRIs are not inherently "better" than each other; rather, they serve different, complementary purposes based on whether functional or structural information is required. A PET scan is used to diagnose cancer, heart disease, and some brain disorders. It supplies information that's different from an MRI or CT scan. While a CT and MRI scan looks at the “form” of structures inside your body, a PET scan looks at their function and shows unusual cellular activity.
Yes, an MRI can cause ear pain, primarily due to the extremely loud, percussive noises generated by the machine's gradient coils, which can lead to temporary (or rarely, permanent) hearing changes, fullness, ringing (tinnitus), and earache, especially without adequate ear protection like earplugs or headphones. The intense sounds (sometimes exceeding 130 dB) vibrate the coils, creating disruptive mechanical noise that affects the inner ear, making proper hearing protection essential for patient comfort and safety.
In particular, MRI scans, CT scans and blood tests are often the preferred choices to detect cancer because of their accuracy, low risk levels, and reliability. We will be looking into these three types of scans for cancer in more detail below.
The major drawback to standard PET is that the images are of substantially lower resolution than, for example, those of CT and MRI, and PET is generally poor at delineating anatomic detail. This lack of detail results in poor localization of lesions and poor demarcation of lesion borders.

However, not every cancer patient will not need these scans. In some cases, the risks may be greater than the benefits. PET and PET-CT scans typically are not recommended for people who had treatment for low-risk cancers and who don't have symptoms.
