Approximately 500 students will get a 99 ATAR in states like Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Approximately 100 students score a 99 every year in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, while approximately 40 students achieve this in the ACT.
The elusive 99.95 ATAR is something a lot of people strive for but few achieve. No matter what your goals are, it helps to learn from someone who's achieved a top ATAR before, if only to learn some useful tips and tricks from them.

54,894 students were eligible for an ATAR. This is 137 fewer than in 2019. 48 students received the top ATAR of 99.95. Of these students, 15 were female and 33 were male; they came from a mix of government and non-government schools and studied a wide range of courses.

As the ATAR is a percentile, a 99.95 ATAR means that you are in the top 0.05% of your state. Likewise, an ATAR of 99 means that you are in the top 1% of your state.
Ultimately, getting 99 ATAR is no easy undertaking. It requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to use all of the resources available to you. For those students who are aiming for the top universities, a high ATAR score is essential – and it is within your reach.
For most people, a good ATAR score is 80.00.
With a score of 80.00, you're in a strong position and have plenty of options.
While I'm not the most qualified person to give you statistics I reckon a 99.75 atar is excellent and will most likely get you into most (if not all) courses (including Medicine which has an extremely high median atar).

For instance, to be on target for an ATAR of 99+, you only need to be average in 4U Maths, whereas you would need to be in the top 3% of 2U Maths. The last proviso “that you are a capable of” is very important. There is no point doing a high scaling Maths course if you cannot do it.
Because the ATAR is a rank and not a score, the top number you can get is 99.95, meaning you have done better in Year 12 than 99.95% of all the Year 12 ATAR eligible students in your state. In order to get a rank of 100 you'd have to have beaten 100 per cent of your cohort…… including yourself, which is impossible.
The average ATAR this year is 70.33, the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre said.
But it's also determined by a complex scaling system that is beyond your control. An ATAR score of 60 doesn't mean you got 60 per cent as a grade. It actually means you're in the top 40 per cent of your year group. Similarly, an ATAR score of 90 means you're placed in the top 10 per cent of your year.
Your Year 11 grades do not count towards your ATAR! Essentially, the ATAR is a percentile number that's calculated using your HSC Marks — aka, your Year 12 marks.
The ATAR is a more precise ranking
Students receive a specific score between 0.00 and 99.95 at increments of 0.05, while the OP system represents a student's score as their position in a broad band that ranges from OP1 (highest possible band) to OP25 (lowest attainable band).
In general, maths and science subjects are scaled up and arts subjects are scaled down. English and business subjects will usually remain the same. There is a misconception that this scaling is based on how difficult the subject is but, in general, subjects are designed to offer the same level of challenge.
ATARs range from 00.00 to 99.95 and compare your child's performance with their cohort on a percentile basis. An ATAR of 90 means that your child did better than 90% of their peers.
Finally, the scaled scores are added together (as described below) to generate an aggregate, which is judged against the aggregates of all other students in the state on a bell curve, producing the ATAR ranking.
