Gaviscon is intended for short-term, on-demand relief of acid reflux. You should not take it for more than 7 days (or 2 weeks, depending on the specific product labeling) without consulting a doctor.

Who can take Gaviscon. Most adults and children 12 years old and over can take Gaviscon. Children under 12 years old can only take it if it's been prescribed by a doctor.
Medicines
Most people who take it do not have any side effects. If you do get a side effect, it's likely to be mild and will go away when you stop taking Gaviscon. It's rare, but the ingredients in some types of Gaviscon may be more likely to make you feel sick or cause vomiting, constipation or diarrhoea.

Dosage & Instructions
Adults and children 12 years and over, take 5-10 ml (one to two 5 ml spoonfuls)) after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. Children under 12 years: Should only be taken on medical advice. If symptoms persist after 7 days, consult your doctor.
If you take this twice a day it is recommended that you take it before your morning and evening meals approximately twelve hours apart. If you are prescribed Gaviscon Advance you should take this after a meal or before bedtime and avoid eating and drinking for 4 hours afterwards. Sips of water are fine.

Safety Warnings
Each 5 ml of GAVISCON ADVANCE ANISEED contains 53 mg or 2.3 mmol sodium and 3.9 mg or 1.0 mmol. As congestive cardiac failure may result from excessive sodium absorption, GAVISCON ADVANCE ANISEED should be administered with caution to patients on a highly restricted salt diet.
