The hippopotamus or hippo, further qualified as the common hippopotamus, Nile hippopotamus, or river hippopotamus, is a large semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus.
The gestation period for Bibi's hippo species is typically eight months.
Elephants are the largest land mammals in the world, so it's perhaps not surprising that they have the longest pregnancy of any living mammal: African elephants are pregnant for an average of 22 months, whilst for Asian elephants it's 18 to 22 months.
A healthy giraffe gestation can last from 14 to 16 months. Bailey's last pregnancy was one day shy of 15 months (457 days) long.

Do hippos mate for life? Hippos do not mate for life. In fact, they have a promiscuous mating system, which means that both males and females mate with multiple partners. During the breeding season, male hippos will establish territories in the water and defend them against other males.

Hippo mothers nurse and care for their offspring for 18 long months-now that's dedication. If you need proof of their loyalty, just look at the sad tale of this mother, who tragically lost her child. In a few cases, hippos have felt so maternal that they've even helped out other species.
Gestation. The gorilla's gestation period is about 8.5 months. It is difficult to tell if a female gorilla is pregnant since her stomach is large to begin with (for food digestion). However, some females have swollen knuckles temporarily during pregnancy.

Giving birth underwater helps the young hippos mother conserve her energy during the birthing process. It also protects the newly born calf from being attacked or even eaten by land predators such as Nile crocodiles, lions, and hyenas.
