Mouthing and play biting is a common phase for most pups and I often reassure owners that their pet will almost always grow out of it when they're around three to five months old. Biting is also part of the natural teething process – this normally lasts until your pup is around seven months of age.
Instead of giving your puppy time-outs for hard biting, start to give him time-outs every time you feel his teeth touch your skin. The instant you feel your puppy's teeth touch you, give a high-pitched yelp. Then immediately walk away from him. Ignore him for 30 to 60 seconds.
Although it might feel like forever, most puppies are biting and mouthing much less by the time they are 8-10 months old, and fully grown adult dogs (older than 2-3 years) virtually never use their mouths the way that puppies do.
But now it's getting worse again! Most likely your puppy is teething. The baby teeth are getting ready to fall out and the adult teeth are starting to come in. It's a difficult time for everyone!
If your puppy starts biting you, give a quick “no” and replace yourself with the tug toy /chew toy. Once your pup engages the toy, say “yes” and give additional praise. Teaching your dog tug can be a great way to stop puppy biting. Just remember, these behaviors can take significant practice and time to overcome.
Puppies can often get overstimulated which causes them to get into a biting frenzy, or just like a toddler that throws a tantrum when it's time for a nap, your puppy may be showing you that they need crate/playpen time to unwind and relax. Puppies also may bite in order to get OUR ATTENTION!
Let your puppy bite you now and again so you can let her know which bites are too hard. Otherwise she won't learn to inhibit her bite. If she is ever startled and bites on instinct, she may cause serious injury. Rule of thumb: From 6-18 weeks of age, allow your puppy to bite when playing as long as it is not too hard.
The behavior is being reinforced.
As puppies, biting was a way for them to try to instigate play and attention, explore the world, and burn off some teething frustration. Which of those three still serves a functional purpose in an older dog? Instigating play and attention.
Never punish your puppy for biting. Your puppy is only doing what they think they are supposed to do. Instead, stick to the guide above to help them learn better behavior choices. As they get older, the biting habit should decline.
A nipping puppy can be playful, but after 15 weeks, puppies should not try to touch human skin with their teeth. Compared to adult teeth, your puppy teeth are razor sharp. If the dog continues to nip or bite you after that time, you need to use training to stop that behavior. Never hit a puppy that bites.
For a dog who is acting out of fear or frustration (for example, a dog who is barking and lunging on leash), using the word 'no' to stop the behavior without helping to alleviate their fear or frustration will often lead to an escalation in behavior, such as growling, air snapping, or biting.
Your dog should understand that their place is on the floor where they are not equal to you. For the same reason you are discouraged from getting on the floor with your dog to play in “their territory,” you should not bring your dog into your territory.
Mouthing in puppies is a harmless way for them to explore the world, but as they get older it can feel like biting so it's important to start training them not to mouth from a young age.
Teach your dog that they receive no attention for jumping on you or anyone else. You can turn your back and only pet your dog when all four paws are on the floor. Teach your dog to do something that is incompatible with jumping up, such as sitting. They can't sit and jump up at the same time.
Methods such as alpha rolls and physical corrections (via the leash and a choke chain or by smacking the dog on the nose or by shaking their scruffs) were often recommended as a way for humans to establish dominance over their dogs.
Nipping involves a small and sudden bite from a dog. Compared to mouthing, nipping usually causes a bit more pain, but the bite is not severe enough to break the skin. Although it is painful, nipping is not an aggressive behavior and is often a sign that the dog wants attention.
The “Witching Hour”
Many owners find that 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. bring out the worst in their puppies! If you know that a particular time of day prompts crazy biting, do your best to manage/prevent the behaviour and engage your puppy otherwise.
Lunging and biting are typical puppy behaviors that can happen due to excitement, boredom, frustration or even because the puppy is tired and needs a nap. It is most often just playful, affectionate, attention-seeking behavior, which means the pup has no malicious intent. That said, it can still be annoying or painful.
“In general, if a dog licks you, they are showing affection. However, if the dog licks someone who is agitated or excited this could be a symptom of stress. By licking that person, they are trying to relieve their stress because they know this is a welcome gesture.
One way to do this is to show your dog what you want or don't want it to do. For example, hold a treat and show it to your dog. As your dog tries to get it, say “no,” and close your fist around the treat. Let your dog sniff and lick at your hand, but don't give it the treat.
The Difference between Dog Biting and Mouthing is that biting is when they break the skin, whereas mouthing is simply them putting their mouth on your body part, sometimes with a good amount of pressure. This is where age and temperament come into play and contacting a trainer if you are unsure.
Bonding Occurs Naturally
It's okay when dogs choose a favorite person. In fact, it's natural! As social animals, dogs choose the person or people who give them plenty of love, attention, and positive experiences.
Avoid lifting from the belly. Avoid lifting by the tail. I know handlers in dog shows lift some dogs by the tail, but these are often dog breeds selectively bred to have a strongly built tail so their owners could pull them out of burrows when in danger. Avoid cradling your dog like a baby.
