Call your pediatrician right away if: Your baby does not urinate normally within 6 to 8 hours after the circumcision. There is persistent bleeding. There is redness around the tip of the penis that gets worse after 3 to 5 days.
Contact your doctor if: Your baby doesn't pee within 12 hours of the circumcision. You see blood on their diaper larger than the size of a quarter. Redness or swelling around their penis gets worse, not better.
Circumcised boys are 16-26 times more likely to develop urinary tract problems, shows new research. Circumcision, whereby the foreskin is removed from the penis, can cause the urethral opening to narrow, making it difficult to urinate.
The significant improvement of the obstructive pattern after circumcision in the same children shows that circumcision has positive effects on urine flow.
Apart from the initial swelling, bleeding and infection are the 2 most common problems associated with circumcision. Other possible complications of circumcision can include: permanent reduction in sensation in the head of the penis, particularly during sex. tenderness around the scar.
Your baby does not have a wet diaper within 12 hours after the circumcision. You find a spot of bleeding larger than a 5-centimetre circle from the incision. Your baby has signs of infection. Signs may include severe swelling; redness; a red streak on the shaft of the penis; or a thick, yellow discharge.
Drink plenty of water – about 6 to 8 glasses per day. If you are not having regular bowel movements, you may need to take a stool softener or a laxative. Speak to a pharmacist about which one to use. If you do not have a bowel movement in the 3 days after surgery, call your doctor.
You will want to avoid putting pressure on the circumcised penis in the first few days. 3) Most babies sleep quite well following the circumcision. The best sleeping position for your baby is on his side, supported by a blanket roll. 4) Healing is promoted by keeping the area clean and dry.
Recovery and Outlook
Recovery from circumcision takes about eight to 10 days. While the penis heals, it may look swollen and red.
Most of the time it takes between 7 to 10 days for a penis to heal. At first the tip of the penis may appear slightly swollen and red and you may notice a small amount of blood on the diaper. You may also notice a slight yellow discharge or crust after a couple of days. This is a normal part of healing.
Morris' systematic review carried out in Australia [23] on early MC, with a total of 40,473 men, showed that medical circumcision (MC) does not adversely affect sexual function, sensitivity or pleasure.
Circumcised men take longer to reach ejaculation, which can be viewed as "an advantage, rather than a complication," writes lead researcher Temucin Senkul, a urologist with GATA Haydarpasa Training Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey.
25] found that the mean IELT (assessed by stopwatch) in circumcised and uncircumcised men was 6.7 minutes (range 0.7–44.1 minutes) and 6.0 minutes (range 0.5–37.4 minutes), respectively. They found that time to ejaculation was significantly less.
It's best to avoid full-body bathing until the second day after surgery, but sponge baths are fine. After the second day, you can shower or bathe as normal, but don't scrub the incision site — just let the soapy warm water run over the incision and pat it dry.
Removing a layer of skin tissue — the foreskin — doesn't have any impact on other penile tissues or how big your penis appears when erect. However, it may have slightly less “bulk” when it's flaccid.
The incision starts off red and tender. The tenderness should be much less by day 3. The scab at the incision line comes off in 7 to 10 days. If a Plastibell (plastic ring) was used, it should fall off by 14 days.
The introduction of a newly modified circumcision method has made it possible to improve the results of the procedure. This method is called the 8-figure non-absorbable suture (8FNS) technique.
Excessive Foreskin Removed
In most cases the denuded area will epithelialize spontaneously and give a satisfactory end result, but the inital appearance can be quite distressing to both parents and practitioner.
It is prudent to apply the petroleum jelly on glans and meatal area of circumcised boys after each diaper change for 6 months post-circumcision.
Baby circumcision care
Stick with sponge baths until your baby's penis is healed and the umbilical cord drops off. You'll want to avoid getting the area wet in a bath before then (though clearly it will get damp when he pees, which is not a problem as long as you change diapers as needed).
Adult circumcision appears to result in worsened erectile function (p = 0.01), decreased penile sensitivity (p = 0.08), no change in sexual activity (p = 0.22) and improved satisfaction (p = 0.04). Of the men 50% reported benefits and 38% reported harm.
It's important to keep the tip of your penis clean. The area should be kept dry for 48 hours after the operation. After this, take warm baths or showers once or twice a day. Don't use bubble bath or scented soaps, as these may irritate your healing wound.
Results. Circumcised men had a slightly lower risk, albeit not statistically significant, of developing prostate cancer than uncircumcised men (OR 0.89, 95% CI 0.76–1.04). Circumcision was found to be protective in men circumcised aged ≥36 years (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.30–0.98).
