Waking up from anesthesia can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the type of anesthesia used and the individual's response to it. Generally, most people wake up within 30 minutes of the anesthesia being administered.
Many people experience confusion, sleepiness, and even delirium-induced hallucinations as they awaken from surgery, but research on this waking process is limited. New research points to a complicated, meandering process through which the brain wakes up from anesthesia.
General anaesthetics can affect your memory, concentration and reflexes for a day or two, so it's important for a responsible adult to stay with you for at least 24 hours after your operation, if you're allowed to go home.
Long recovery
Currently, there are no drugs to bring people out of anesthesia. When surgeons finish an operation, the anesthesiologist turns off the drugs that put the patient under and waits for them to wake up and regain the ability to breathe on their own.
In most cases, a delayed awakening from anesthesia can be attributed to the residual action of one or more anesthetic agents and adjuvants used in the peri-operative period. The list of potentially implicated drugs includes benzodiazepines (BDZs), propofol, opioids, NMBAs, and adjuvants.

In fact, researchers conducting a 2006 Duke University study found that surgeries scheduled between 3 and 4 p.m. had a higher rate of post-op vomiting, nausea, and pain.
Patients who undergo outpatient surgery must have someone to drive them home and stay with them for 24 hours following surgery. The medications you received during your surgery may affect your memory and mental judgment for the next 24 hours.
Most general anesthetics will last between 1-2 hours. However, some procedures may require longer periods of anesthesia. For instance, complex surgeries such as spinal surgeries may require 3-4 hours of anesthesia. The length of time a person is under anesthesia also depends on the type of anesthesia used.
Anesthesia won't make you confess your deepest secrets
Rest assured, even if you do say something you wouldn't normally say while you are under sedation, Dr. Meisinger says, “it's always kept within the operating room. We know the patient is under extra medications and it's not a concern to us at all.”
Many people who experience anesthesia awareness have vague or fuzzy memories of a procedure after they wake up. Most of the medications used for anesthesia can affect the memory, so you may even have some level of awareness during a procedure and not remember it afterward.
Troianos says. “In the 1960s and 1970s, it wasn't uncommon to have a death related to anesthesia in every one in 10,000 or 20,000 patients,” he says. “Now it's more like one in every 200,000 patients — it's very rare.”
He says for children, crying after anesthesia is very common – it happens in about 30 to 40 percent of the cases. For adults, the numbers are much lower – he estimates them to be around three percent – but crying is not even something that gets written down in the patient notes.
