High-risk HPV infections often clear on their own, but if persistent, it typically takes 10 to 15 years for precancerous cell changes to develop into cervical cancer, though the time from initial infection to abnormal cells can range from months to a decade. Most HPV infections (around 90%) are cleared by the immune system within one to two years, with only a small percentage leading to long-term issues, making regular screening crucial.
Often, HPV warts will appear three to six months after sexual relations with an infected person; or they may never appear. Likewise, the interval between an infection with HPV and changes to cervical cells can vary from months to decades.
Incubation period. 2 to 3 months, with a range of 1 to 20 months for genital warts. It can take up to 10 years for a high-risk HPV infection to develop into cancer.
Most people with HPV do not experience symptoms. However, some types of HPV cause a rash- like appearance, warts, or bumps on the skin. They may occur in or around the genitals, anus, tongue, mouth, or lips. Sometimes, HPV also causes warts on other areas of skin, such as the hands or feet.
High-risk HPV doesn't have symptoms
That's why regular checkups are so important — testing is the only way to know for sure if you're at risk for cancer from HPV. Testing can find HPV and abnormal cell changes before they cause problems, so you can get treatment to stay healthy.
Sometimes, after several negative HPV tests, a woman may have a positive HPV test result. This is not necessarily a sign of a new HPV infection. Sometimes an HPV infection can become active again after many years. Some other viruses behave this way.
High-risk forms of HPV don't cause symptoms, which means you'll likely learn about an infection through a routine Pap smear or HPV test. Pap smear: A Pap smear screens for cervical cancer and precancerous cells that may become cancer if left untreated.
If you test positive for HPV and your Pap test is normal, your doctor will most likely recommend repeating the Pap and HPV screening exams in one year. If your second HPV test comes back negative, continue regular Pap and HPV tests. If your second HPV test comes back positive, your doctor may recommend a colposcopy.
Symptoms
When do genital warts usually develop? It can take several weeks, months, or even years after you have sexual contact with someone who has genital warts for them to show up. That's why it's so hard to know when you got the HPV infection that caused them, or who passed it to you.

A new analysis of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) in men shows that infection with one HPV type strongly increases the risk of reinfection with the same type. In fact, men who are infected with the type responsible for most HPV-related cancers are 20 times more likely to be reinfected within one year.
Increased vaginal discharge, which may be pale, watery, pink, brown, bloody, or foul-smelling. Abnormal vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods, after sex, douching or a pelvic exam. Longer or heavier menstrual periods. Bleeding after menopause.
The latency period of anogenital HPV infection is highly variable but is usually 3–6 months. Warts will often appear 3–6 months after HPV infection, but latency periods of many months or even decades have been reported.
Although research has focused on how high-risk HPV causes cancer in the cervix, HPV-caused cancers at other sites are likely to arise through similar mechanisms. Research has found that it can take 5 to 10 years for HPV-infected cervical cells to develop into precancers and about 20 years to develop into cancer.
HPV Symptoms In Women
Genital warts can cause itching and discomfort, as well as bleeding with intercourse. The National Cancer Institute says long-term, high-risk HPV can infect cells and cause cancer of the cervix. It recommends regular cervical cancer screenings for early detection.
An individual must be referred to colposcopy and should be seen within 2 weeks of referral (≥93% of cases) if the appearance of the cervix is suspicious or they have symptoms consistent with cervical cancer.
Removing the cervix does not necessarily get rid of HPV (human papillomavirus). HPV is a viral infection that can remain in your body even after the cervix is removed through a hysterectomy. A colposcopy is as painless as other exams that use a speculum, says the American Cancer Society. It's often just uncomfortable, not painful. About 40% of people get normal results, and 60% might see abnormal cells, often from cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN).
A lot of my patients are confused and afraid when they test positive for high-risk strains. As an ob-gyn, here is what I share with them. Having HPV does not mean that you have or will develop cancer. It takes many years for HPV infection to cause cell changes that develop into cancer.
