Pain, soreness, and tightness after PDO threads are normal and usually subside within 1 to 2 weeks, though some mild discomfort can linger for up to 4 weeks, with tenderness to touch improving within the first few days to a week. Expect initial swelling, bruising, and a pulling sensation as the threads integrate, with most normal activities possible after 2-4 days, but avoid wide mouth opening and strenuous activity for 1-2 weeks.
It's normal to experience some pain after a thread lift procedure. The pain is caused by the body's natural response to the threads and the needles that put them into place. Tightening of the excess skin can cause temporary discomfort as well.
Thread lift recovery generally spans a few weeks. The first stage, involving swelling, bruising, and tenderness, usually lasts one to two weeks. By the third to fourth week, most people can return to their usual routine, with only minor adjustments still needed.
It is recommended to avoid touching, wetting and washing your face for a minimum of 12 hours after the treatment. Even after that, it is best not to scrub or massage the treated area for around three weeks post-treatment.
Is a thread lift painful? During a thread lift procedure, you receive local anesthesia, so you don't feel any pain. After the procedure, you may experience some pain, discomfort and soreness.
Even though it is non-invasive, after your threading procedure you should expect some mild swelling and bruising. This is completely normal and will typically subside within the first week or two. During these first few weeks, the threads are still settling, and collagen production is just beginning.
If you have a very low pain tolerance or extremely sensitive skin, threading might feel a little intense at first. However, many people find it precise and allows the esthetician to stop when necessary.
If you're concerned about pain, applying a numbing cream 30 minutes before your session can help reduce discomfort. Some threading salons also offer numbing gel.
Here are detailed post-care tips to ensure a smooth, effective healing period and maximize the longevity of your lift:
Avoid touching or rubbing excessively: Refrain from touching or rubbing the threaded areas excessively, as this can lead to irritation and inflammation. Let your skin heal naturally without interference. Say no to makeup immediately: Resist the urge to apply makeup immediately after threading.
You can use a cool or heat compress to help with the swelling. Sleep with your head elevated as it will minimise swelling and promote healing. In the first week, feel free to walk around your house for 15 to 20 minutes. Gradually, build up the duration to 30 minutes as you feel better.
Any swelling and/or bruising will peak three to four days following your surgery. It is recommended that you sleep on two pillows for the first two weeks following your surgery to help alleviate swelling.
Most people return to normal activities within 1–2 days, but avoid strenuous activity and facial pressure for at least 2 weeks. Does a thread lift hurt? Discomfort is minimal. You may feel mild pressure or tightness during and after the procedure, but most patients describe it as very tolerable.
Apply a Cold Compress: Gently apply a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth to the threaded area for 10-15 minutes to reduce redness and soothe the skin. Use Aloe Vera Gel: Aloe vera has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Applying a thin layer of pure aloe vera gel can help calm the skin and reduce irritation.
Do apply cold compresses as needed: Icing the treated area and surrounding areas can help reduce swelling. But make sure to only keep the ice pack on the skin for 10 to 15 minutes. Putting too much ice on the skin for too long can cause injuries.
Potential for complications: Although less risky than surgery, thread lifts can still have unwanted side effects. Patients may experience infection, irritation, or asymmetry. One research study found that over 30% of patients experienced an infection after a thread lift.
Taking Care of Your Skin after Threading
Ideally, the thread will slide smoothly over the skin picking up the hairs along the way. More sensitive skins can experience irritation and some pain. Every so often the thread can pinch the skin giving a bit more “zing” than normal – but totally tolerable.
Week 1: Most visible swelling subsides; facial contours begin to take shape. Week 2–3: Skin starts healing around threads; mild residual swelling may remain. Month 1–2: Threads fully integrate; collagen production enhances lifting effect. Month 3–6: Maximum result achieved; skin looks firmer and more defined.
How a Facelift Surgery Can Take 10 Years Off Your Face. If you are seeking a more youthful appearance for your face, a facelift surgery might be the procedure you're looking for. This surgery, called a rhytidectomy, will remove major wrinkles, smooth lines and reduce sagging skin on your face and neck.
There is a reason the vast majority of board-certified facial plastic surgeons, myself included, do not offer threads and generally are opposed to their use. Simply, they don't work as advertised.
Consider Numbing Cream
If you are concerned about discomfort during threading, apply a small amount of numbing cream on your eyebrows before your appointment. This cream can help reduce sensitivity in the area.
