A colonoscopy procedure itself typically takes 20 to 45 minutes, but the entire visit to the clinic, including prep and recovery from sedation, usually lasts 2 to 4 hours, requiring someone to drive you home afterward. The short procedure time is for the doctor to insert the scope, examine the colon, and potentially remove polyps or take biopsies, while the longer time accounts for sedation, monitoring, and recovery before you can safely leave.

Symptoms
A gastroenterologist, the specialist who usually performs a colonoscopy, can't tell for certain if a colon polyp is precancerous or cancerous until it's removed and examined under a microscope.
Bowel polyps are not usually cancerous, although if they're discovered they'll need to be removed, as some will eventually turn into cancer if left untreated.
