Rats typically live for 3 to 10 days after eating anticoagulant poison, dying from internal bleeding because the poison prevents their blood from clotting. The exact time depends on the poison type (first or second-generation), the dose, and the rat's health, with some acute poisons working much faster (hours to days), while anticoagulants cause a gradual decline over several days.
Will rats come back after poisoning? It's possible. Rats may develop resistance to the toxin or bait shyness could lead to them avoiding your bait station. Or you may have a recurring infestation.
We use a slow-acting poison (rodenticide) bait, which will kill the rat once it has eaten a lethal dose. This can take between 4 and 12 days.
Other rats will typically avoid the carcass, but they are still attracted to the same food and shelter that drew the first rat. In some cases, rats may chew on a carcass if food is scarce, but this isn't common.
The issue is really because rodenticide does not always have a 100% kill rate. Many poisoned rats survive. These rats then carry genetic mutations which are passed on to their children. Technically this is known as L120Q resistance, and it's this mutation which basically makes rats immune to poison.
An often perpetuated 'old wives' tale' is that anti-coagulant poisons make the rats and mice thirsty and they go outside in search of water and die there. There is a little truth in this, there is a slightly increased likelihood of the rodents dying outside, but in most cases, they will go to their nest and die there.

Wild rats are not used to human contact and will bite when handled or when people attempt to feed them by hand. The nocturnal creatures have also been known to bite sleeping people, particularly children and infants, on exposed body parts such as fingers, hands, toes and the face when foraging for food.
How long will rats stay in one place? Rats may stay in one location indefinitely if food, water, and shelter remain available and undisturbed.
It can take as long as 10 days for a rodent to die after consuming rodenticides. During this time, they can experience nosebleeds and blood in their urine and feces and also can develop mange. They may even become an easier target for some predators as their health fails.
If you've only seen one rat in the past two weeks, your problem may not be particularly extensive. However, if you're seeing rats every day or so, or you've turned on a light at night and 3-4 rats scurry, you've probably got a pretty extensive rat infestation on your hands.
Ineffectiveness in the Long Term – Rats are highly intelligent creatures. They quickly learn to avoid poisoned bait if they sense it's dangerous. This means that over time, baiting loses its effectiveness.
Bait blocks and other rodent poisons can provide permanent solutions to invading rats or mice, but they present dangers and drawbacks all their own. Rodents that eat bait blocks typically don't die in the open. They sneak off to die and decompose—complete with home-permeating smells—in hard-to-reach hiding places.
Evolutionary survival advantages: Nocturnal activity enables rats to exploit food sources and territorial opportunities without competition from diurnal species while avoiding detection by visual predators including birds of prey, cats, and human observers.
How long does it take for rat poison to work? Once the rat consumes the poison it can take 2–3 days for the poison to work and the rodent to die. Incidentally, once a rat is poisoned it will stop feeding and this greatly reduces the risk of secondary poisoning.

Rats are capable of remembering places where they found food or shelter, and scent trails help guide them back. That's why rodent problems often repeat when entry points, food sources, or odors remain unchanged.
Look for signs of rat or mouse infestation: Rodent droppings around food packages, in drawers or cupboards, and under the sink. Nesting material such as shredded paper, fabric, or dried plant matter. Signs of chewing on food packaging.
Sleeping with the lights on will not effectively keep rats away.
You can usually tell how many rats are in your house by the nest size. If the rat's nest is small, there may be only a few rats, but if it's large, there may be dozens of rats in your house. If you find a rat's nest in your house, you should take steps to get rid of the rats as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Rats are agile climbers, capable of scaling brick walls, wooden fences, trellises, drainpipes, trees, and climbing plants. This climbing ability is one of the reasons it's so important to physically block entry points, which we'll cover in more detail in the next section.
