Today, avoid foods that are sweet, spicy or hard to digest. Eat more foods as your body can tolerate. If you feel nauseated, do not eat or drink anything for one hour and then try drinking clear liquids.
So after surgery sometimes your intestines can shut down. It's called an ileus and it basically means that the intestines aren't actively moving food forward, and so if that's happening then you can't eat yet.
After surgery you may not be able to eat or drink right away. When your body is ready, your doctor will likely tell you to follow a clear fluid diet for 1 to 3 days. This means you will not be able to eat solid foods. Sometimes your doctor will tell you to follow a full fluid diet before eating solid foods.
Traditionally, postoperative oral hydration after general anesthesia (non-gastrointestinal surgery) has been withheld for about 4-6 hours for safety, in order to avoid vomiting, nausea because of residual anesthetics and incomplete emergence [2,3].
After surgery, anesthesia stays in the body for a short period. Drinking plenty of water can help flush the anesthesia from the system. During recovery, many people also take pain medications that can cause constipation. Water helps the digestive system work more efficiently, reducing this uncomfortable side effect.
This is because your wound should not be soaked in water until it's healed. It could cause the skin to soften and reopen the wound. Guidelines published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) say you can have a shower 48 hours after surgery.
How long does it take for a general anaesthetic to get out of your system? The effects of the anaesthetic can last for 24 hours, or longer if you have had a major operation. You may feel tired or even exhausted afterwards, and this might last for a few days.

Alcohol is also an anesthesiologist's nightmare! We ask you not to have any alcohol after your surgery for the same reason: thin blood may make it difficult for your body to heal, which prolongs the recovery stage. Alcohol disrupts how your body absorbs anesthesia, and as a result, may make some sedatives ineffective.
Caffeine performed the best, accelerating recovery time by more than 60 percent.
Don't drive a car for at least 24 hours. Don't operate complex equipment for at least 24 hours. Don't make any important decisions or sign any legal documents for the day. Don't take any medications unless prescribed by or discussed with your physician.
As well as eating the right foods after surgery, there are a few you should avoid. Some options increase the chances of constipation, including cheese, red meat, sugary treats, and processed foods. Processed foods also lack the nutrients needed to heal, so are especially detrimental to your health.
The process of waking up from anesthesia is known as emergence. During emergence, the anesthesiologist will slowly reduce the amount of anesthetic drugs in the body. This helps to reduce the intensity of the effects of anesthesia and allows the patient to regain consciousness.
Usually, before having a general anaesthetic, you will not be allowed anything to eat or drink. This is because when the anaesthetic is used, your body's reflexes are temporarily stopped. If your stomach has food and drink in it, there's a risk of vomiting or bringing up food into your throat.
Some people feel sleepy but otherwise fine as the anesthesia wears off; others have side effects such as nausea or chills, and sometimes vomiting. Your throat may be sore from a tube that helped you breathe during surgery.
Anaesthesia Effects
Not only do you need someone to drive you home after the procedure, but it's important that you avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after you leave the hospital or while taking any pain medication.
When can I eat and drink again? As already advised, you must not drink alcohol for 24 hours after your procedure. Alcohol in combination with any sedation is likely to have a more sedative effect.
Following surgery it is generally advisable to avoid drinking alcohol for at least two weeks, and even then only after you have finished taking pain medication and any antibiotics you were prescribed by your consultant.
You are encouraged to drink clear liquids before surgery or anesthesia — NOT milk or dairy products — until 2 hours before the time you are scheduled to arrive at the hospital or surgery center. Staying hydrated is good for you, and it's especially important in hot weather!
Waking up from anesthesia can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the type of anesthesia used and the individual's response to it. Generally, most people wake up within 30 minutes of the anesthesia being administered.
During the procedure
Once you're asleep, the anesthesiologist or CRNA may insert a flexible, plastic breathing tube into your mouth and down your windpipe. The tube ensures that you get enough oxygen. It also protects your lungs from oral secretions or other fluids such as stomach fluids.
Generally, it takes between one to four hours for the body to completely recover from general anesthesia and between a few minutes to a few hours for local or regional anesthesia.
Avoiding post‐operative bathing or showering for two to three days may result in accumulation of sweat and dirt on the body. Conversely, early washing of the surgical wound may have an adverse effect on healing, for example by irritating or macerating the wound, and disturbing the healing environment.
On the day of surgery, you may be asked to arrive several hours before your procedure is scheduled to begin. This allows the staff to complete any tests that cannot be performed until the day of surgery.
