You can wear most clothes with a stoma by choosing high-waisted styles (pants, skirts, underwear) to go over the bag, opting for looser fits like tunics or A-line dresses, and using layers (jackets, scarves) for discretion, while avoiding tight waistbands directly on the stoma for comfort and security, with specialist undergarments and wraps available if needed.
There is no reason why you can't wear a variety of different clothing that is comfortable and fashionable. The most important rule with clothing, is to ensure that belts or waistbands are not worn over your stoma or restrict the bag too much.
Wearing layers of clothing can help to minimise the visibility of your stoma pouch. Or try wearing a wrap which you can use as layering beneath clothing, these can be coupled with or without leggings or tights. Not only do wraps keep your pouch slim to your body, but they also offer a little bit of support too.
- High-Waisted Pants: Many users recommend wearing high-waisted pants, jeans, or leggings that sit above the stoma. This allows the bag to expand without being constricted and provides better coverage. High-waisted pants can also help conceal the bag and prevent it from being visible through clothing.
The "two-finger rule" for pants is a simple fit test: you should be able to comfortably slide two fingers between your waistband and your stomach. It ensures the waist isn't too tight (allowing for bloating or eating) but snug enough to prevent sagging, indicating a good, comfortable fit for both jeans and trousers.
You can bathe or shower with or without wearing your pouching system - the choice is up to you. Water will not enter your stoma while enjoying a soak without your pouch.
Disability is not about whether you can walk a certain distance or have fully functioning limbs. Whether or not you feel disabled or class yourself as disabled, in the eyes of the law living with a stoma does class you as having a disability.

After the operation, you will not pass urine in the same way as before. Instead, urine flows from your kidneys through the ureters and the piece of bowel and out of your body through the stoma. You wear a bag over the stoma to collect the urine. The stoma should be easy for you to reach to empty or change the bag.

Running out of supplies can be stressful, but solutions are available. Always contact your stoma nurse or supplier first. Pharmacies may also offer emergency bags. If no supplies are available right away, an important part of what to do if you run out of ostomy bags is to protect the stoma.
The pouches are odor-free, and they do not allow gas or stool to leak out when they are worn correctly. Your nurse will teach you how to care for your ostomy pouch and how to change it. You will need to empty it when it is about 1/3 full, and change it about every 2 to 4 days, or as often as your nurse tells you.
If you have a colostomy or ileostomy, you'll use the toilet to pee but not to poop. You'll also use the toilet to empty your ostomy bag.
