To tone down orange wood stain, apply a stain with blue/green undertones (as blue cancels orange), use a tan or gray paint wash, or try a darkening gel stain like walnut over the existing finish; for significant changes, sand and bleach the wood first, or use a blue-green dye toner.
If you're planning on staining, add a little blue or green to your stain, or if you have the ability to spray, tone some of your topcoat about 10% with blue or green and that should knock out your excessive orange.
Mix in a little of one of Frenchic's white or pale paints – around 10-15% depending on the look you are after and how dark the orange tones of the wood are. It can be helpful to apply with a clean sponge in long smooth strokes, and always working in the direction of the wood grain.
PAINT COLORS: There are two routes you can go when picking paint colors for warm/orange floors – either enhance the color or neutralize it. White, red, yellow, and orange will further accentuate the orange coloring in the wood. Blue, green, and purple will neutralize it.

For hard to lighten wood stain, use oxalic acid, known as "wood bleach." If that doesn't work, strip off the old stain and start fresh.
Presoak (the method of soaking a stained article in warm water before laundering it) in a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1/2 teaspoon liquid dishwashing or laundry detergent, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar for 15 minutes. Rinse well with water and launder as soon as possible.

Fortunately, you can follow these tips to wash the stain off. Soak the stained clothing in 1 scoop of Vanish Gold Oxi Action Powder in four liters of water. Soak the item for up to an hour, unless it is white, in which case you can soak for up to four hours. Pop in the machine with another scoop of Vanish.

Even if you simply want to change the tone of your color (e.g. make it more red or brown) without darkening it, PolyShades® can help. However, if you wish to lighten the color, it is not as simple as applying a light color of PolyShades® over it—you will need to strip the existing finish first.
Oak will always look more orange when wet. For this particular piece of wood, I ended up going back over it with an almost full-strength stain but wiping it away almost immediately. That worked very well to neutralize those orange wood hues.
The key to fixing orange hair is usually to neutralise the orange with its opposite colour – blue.
Blue cancels out orange on the color wheel. However, unless you're toning or want to risk muddy results, it's usually better to work with your orange hair color rather than trying to cancel it out completely.
The answer is simpler than you might think. On a standard colour wheel, purple is roughly opposite yellow and orange, making them opposite colours. By applying purple products to your hair, you can cancel out, or neutralise, the warmer tones you want to remove – it's as easy as that!
