The Milton Method (cold water sterilising)
Fill your plastic sterilising unit with 5 litres of tap water. Add 30ml of Milton Sterilising Fluid or a Milton Sterilising Tablet and wait to dissolve. Follow the instructions on the fluid and tablet packaging carefully.
You don't need to rinse everything you clean with Milton spray. Rinse only surfaces in contact with food or items that your baby can put in its mouth.
Sterilise the parts in the same way that you sterilise bottles and teats. Sterilising after each use is especially important if the baby is less than two months old or premature. After sterilising, leave parts on a clean tea towel or piece of kitchen towel to air dry thoroughly.
Milton method, instructions: For baby bottles and utensils, add 1/2 capful (15ml) of Milton Fluid for every 2.5 litres of water (dilution at 0.6% V/V). Wash bottles and utensils before immersing items in the solution. They are disinfected and ready to use after 15 minutes.

How long will a bottle stay sterile after being removed from the Milton solution? Bottles should be filled immediately after removal from the Milton solution. Teats should be covered.
The "2-hour bottle rule" means prepared infant formula or breast milk left at room temperature should be used within 2 hours, or immediately refrigerated and used within 24 hours, because bacteria from the baby's mouth (saliva) can contaminate it, causing rapid bacterial growth. Milton sterilising fluid is a form of diluted bleach, containing 2 percent sodium hypochlorite. It can be bought in most supermarkets and pharmacies. Milton baths use a gentle mixture of diluted bleach and water, very similar to the chlorine used in swimming pools.
Before sterilising, you need to: Clean bottles, teats and other feeding equipment in hot, soapy water as soon as possible after feeds. Use a clean bottle brush to clean bottles (only use this brush for cleaning bottles), and a small teat brush to clean the inside of teats.
Fill your unit with 5L of cold water, add 1 Milton Tablet. Let the tablet fully dissolve. Close the lid and in just 15 minutes everything is sterilised. Items can stay in the solution until needed.
Milton fluid (containing 2% hypochlorite) should be diluted to 1 in 20 (divide the volume of water by 20 e.g. for 1 litre (1000ml) add 50 ml of Milton) to wipe over pre-cleaned surfaces and leave for 4 minutes. Milton tablets - add 1 Milton tablet to 500ml water to create a 1000ppm dilution.
METHOD FOR MILTON TABLETS & MILTON FLUID
Add 1 sterilising tablet and let it dissolve or pour in 30 ml, 1 full cap. Follow instructions on the pack carefully. Close lid and wait for 15 mins. Rinse items in cooled boiled water before use.
