You can almost always tell when this is a dog's love language by how much physical affection they insist on giving you. From cuddles, kisses, and that insistent paw on your arm, you can confidently say that love is shown.
But since dogs don't speak the same language we do, it's always been questioned whether dogs really understand what we mean when we express our love. As it turns out, a new study indicates that dogs do understand the words “I love you”—at least, to some degree!
If they miss you more than they can bear, your pooch will offer you a few telltale signs. Chewing on your possessions, crying when you leave, and staring at the door after you've gone are all key indicators.
Your dog shows you love them through body language and behavior. For example, they will stare at you and make direct eye content. This is their way of saying they trust and love you. They will also have obvious signs like a big smile, a wagging tail and a bottom-wiggle.

When your dog cuddles up with you, they are acknowledging that you are a member of its pack. It's a sign of affection, closeness, and connection, and your 'furkid' is saying that it feels safe to be with you. It's a continuation of the bonding process that began when you and your dog first met each other.

So, yes, a puppy can definitely think of you as his “mother” — that is, his provider and protector — and develop as strong an emotional bond with you as if you were blood-related. Your puppy will also quickly learn to pick you out among strangers, both by sight and through his powerful sense of smell.
