Most dogs assume a neutral or submissive role toward people, but some dogs will challenge their owners for dominance. A dominant dog may stare, bark, growl, snap, or even bite when you give him a command or ask him to give up a toy, treat, or resting place.
Dogs acknowledge a leader. In a one-dog family, the dog can (and should) recognize one of the humans as the leader. If the dog lives in a household with a mother, a father, and some children, the dog will often accept the parent that the children go to for guidance and permission as the leader.
The alpha dog is the dog to which other dogs are submissive. Alphas may achieve and maintain their position by strength and aggression, or via social efforts and building alliances. We all know “Alpha Dogs”—you may even be one yourself.

Dogs choose to sleep where they feel most comfortable and at ease, so if your dog enjoys sleeping in your bed, or likes to snuggle up to you for a nap, they feel trust in you that they will be safe to do so.
Just like with food, dogs instinctually know that the Pack Leader is in control and should be the one to lead. Dogs don't walk ahead of their Pack Leader, so you will need to change your role if you're the one following your dog around the house.
Males can be more dominant, territorial, and easily distracted than female dogs. On the other hand, males can also be more playful, active, and independent. Dominance and territorial behaviour can also be seen in unspayed females when they are in heat.
Dominant: He follows easily, tail up, gets under foot and jumps or nips. Submissive: He follows you with uncertainty, tail down. Independent: He wanders off and ignores you. Rollover: Gently roll the puppy over onto his back.
Like their human counterparts, dogs develop favorite people over time based on positive experiences and positive associations with that person. Some people use tasty treats and other rewards to create strong bonds with pets, but the best way to build a healthy relationship with your dog is through play.
And it is not just the amount of attention and affection that matters, it is also the quality of time you spend together. Your dog's favorite person likely offers them treats, spends one-on-one time with them, and grooms or messages them. After all, physical affection solidifies this bond.
