You can tell pinworm medicine is working primarily by the reduction and eventual stopping of anal itching within a few days to a week after treatment. The medication kills the worms, which are then passed in your stool.
Pinworm eggs continue to be present (excreted) in the feces of an infected person for up to a week after the treatment, so precautions should be taken to prevent reinfection by washing hands thoroughly, especially under the nails.
Pyrantel is used to treat pinworms (enterobiasis; oxyuriasis). This medicine may also be used for other worm infections as determined by your doctor. Pyrantel works by paralyzing the worms. They are then passed in the stool.
How are pinworms treated? Your child will need to take an oral (taken by mouth) anti-parasitic medication to kill the worms. They'll take one dose immediately and another dose two weeks later to be sure all the worms are gone.

Preventing another pinworm infection
Pinworm eggs can cling to surfaces indoors for up to 3 weeks. This includes the surfaces of toys, faucets, bedding and toilet seats. Clean these items often.
After 400 mg albendazole intake, APC results became negative in all cultured stool samples (Tables 1 and 2). However, MFECT results showed an increase in the number of larvae, by 1.4 to 18 times over those before albendazole intake, in 97.4% (148/152) of the stool samples.
To help prevent spread within the home, when pinworms are identified in one family member, use these precautions: Treat any person who sleeps in the same bed as the infected child. Treat non-bed sharing family members only if they have symptoms. Treat all family members who develop symptoms.

You can spot threadworms in your poo. They look like pieces of white thread. You might also see them around your child's bottom (anus). The worms usually come out at night while your child is sleeping.

If a problem is occurring, then daily bathing is best. If the skin is irritated a dilute mild antiseptic can help. Applying Vaseline to the skin after cleaning can help protect the skin and prevent the eggs sticking.
It can take up to 3 days for Ovex to kill mature threadworms and for them to be excreted in your stool. If you continue to notice active worms in your stool a week after taking Ovex you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist as they may advise you to take a second dose after 2 weeks.
How Long Does It Take The Medicine to Work? Reese's Pinworm Medicine typically takes between 48 and 72 hours to take effect.
