A cyst is "too big" when it causes significant symptoms like severe pain, bloating, pressure, or difficulty with bowel movements/sex, or if it's over 6-10 cm, increasing risks for complications like twisting (torsion) or rupture, requiring medical evaluation to determine if removal or monitoring is needed. Size alone isn't the only factor; symptoms and imaging (like ultrasound) showing solid parts or rapid growth also signal concern.
Once a cyst grows larger than 6 centimeters, your doctor may recommend further evaluation or treatment. Large cysts have a slightly higher chance of being cancerous, although most are still benign. They're also more likely to cause symptoms like pain or bloating and carry a risk of ovarian torsion or rupture.
Surgery during pregnancy (open vs laparoscopy) An asymptomatic adnexal mass presenting as a simple cyst of five centimetre or smaller or a cyst with unequivocal benign features as stated above is very likely to resolve by itself and no further follow-up or treatment during pregnancy is necessary.
In addition, if a cyst is filled with pus, that means it's infected and could form an abscess, so you should see a doctor if you feel pain when you touch a cyst.
Treatment
Inflamed and painful cysts can sometimes be treated with a quick injection of a steroid such as cortisone, which will reduce inflammation and cause the cyst to shrink almost immediately.
What Happens if a Cyst is Left Untreated? Leaving a cyst alone may not always cause problems, but there are risks when treatment is delayed. Some cysts can become infected, leading to redness, pain, or pus drainage. Others may continue to grow, pressing on nearby tissues.
However, you should definitely see a doctor if your cyst displays any of these symptoms: Yellow discharge, which could indicate an infection. Pain, tenderness, or redness. A rapid change in size, color, or shape.
Common cyst causes
One of the most common reasons cysts form on the skin is due to clogged sebaceous glands. These glands lubricate your skin, and if they get blocked, this can cause fluid to pool in one area. Other reasons cysts can form include the following: Injury or irritation to a hair follicle.
Skin cysts do not need to be treated if they're not causing any problems. But treatment may be recommended if you have: an infected skin cyst – you may be given antibiotics. a large, painful cyst which interferes with everyday life – for example, a cyst on your head that catches when you brush your hair.
An ovarian cyst can vary in size from half an inch to 4 inches, and sometimes even much larger. Small cysts less than 5 centimeters across are considered to be benign (non-cancerous). In general, if an ovarian mass is over 5 centimeters across, it is considered dangerous and should be surgically removed.
In fact, they tend to get bigger if left untreated. Some untreated cysts can become abscesses and burst inside your body, releasing infection into your bloodstream.
Large cysts (more than 10 cm): Larger cysts have a higher chance of causing complications, including rupture, torsion, or pressure on nearby organs. Surgical intervention is usually considered at this size. Giant cysts (greater than 15 cm): This size of cysts is rare but can lead to complicated health risks.
When to be concerned
Cysts can develop in response to a pelvic infection (called an abscess). If an infected cyst ruptures, it can trigger sepsis, a life-threatening immune response to harmful bacteria. Women with infected cysts are treated with antibiotics and sometimes require hospitalization for surgical drainage of the cyst.
If you find a lump, don't panic. A majority of these are benign, which often feel like a round, smooth rubber ball. Malignant lumps, on the other hand, are irregular, firm and unable to be moved.
The Verdict. Not all cysts are dangerous, nor do they all require removal surgery. That said, your dermatologist might recommend a cyst excision procedure if your cyst is causing you pain or discomfort, if said cyst is infected or cancerous, or if it appears to be the best option for eliminating the lesion for good.
Some cysts decrease in size, while others continue to grow until you get treatment. Without treatment, you may have the cyst for the rest of your life.
