While fusible hem tape offers a convenient alternative to traditional sewing methods, it's important to note that the bond is permanent. Once the tape is applied, it cannot be removed.
It's strong enough to survive washing and wearing, yet you can usually remove it with heat if you need to make adjustments later.
Preheat iron to medium heat, NO steam. Place adhesive on back of material to be bonded (paper liner should face up). Place and hold iron on the paper liner with medium pressure for 2-4 seconds. Move the iron by lifting and repositioning it with slight overlaps until the entire surface is bonded.
Limitations of Adhesive Bonding
Limited visibility– visual examination of the bonded area is limited or not available. Cure times– some adhesive bonding processes require long cure times or high-temperature curing.
Fabric edge stretched during handling or cutting. Hem on bias or curved edge needs easing. Stitching before pressing the hem crease. Thread tension too tight (thread pulls fabric) Wrong needle/thread combination for the fabric weight.
Adhesive sewing banner tapes offer advantages such as: Efficiency: Installing banner hem tape is much easier than sewing banner hems and takes a simple 5-10 compared to hours behind a sewing machine. Economy: Banner hem tapes are economical and minimize finishing costs due to the time and labor they save.
Any chemicals that the fabric was treated with may be interfering with the bonding process. The HeatnBond may also be overheated. The adhesive will appear dark and glossy if this is the case. The adhesive may seep through the fabric, as well.
We are often asked, "Can glue guns be used on fabric?" The simple answer is yes but you will need to know a few things first about the type of glue gun and glue stick you are using. Once you find the right glue gun and glue stick, hot melt is excellent at bonding fabric and other porous materials.
Here are some tips.
If the tape doesn't stick well, your iron wasn't warm enough (or you didn't leave it on long enough for the tape to heat up). When working with delicate fabrics, use a pressing cloth. Work in sections if you're working on a wide area to keep your tape nice and straight and your hemline from being uneven or wrinkled.

How long does it take fabric glue to dry? We recommend allowing for around 24 hours for Bostik Fabric Glue to completely cure, though it may be dry to the touch in less time.
MadamSew's Fusible Hem Tape comes in 2 sizes (⅜ of an inch and ¾ of an inch) and is basically a glue strip for fabrics. It is intended to be permanent and is hard to remove from the fabric once it is applied. Always test on a scrap of fabric before ironing it to your project or garment!!
It is recommended to wash your jeans before hemming them, especially if they are brand new.
Roll Them Up
This involves taking a small section of denim material at the bottom of each pant leg and rolling it up a few inches. When rolled up, your jeans will look, as well as fit, shorter than before. There are a few different ways to roll up your jeans. Perhaps the most popular method is the pin-roll method.
If you wash your garment and/or dry it (especially in the dryer), it will melt and ruin your clothes.
