To dye air dry clay black, knead high-pigment black acrylic paint, oil paint, or black food coloring into the clay until fully blended. For the darkest results, start with white clay, use concentrated pigment, and add more paint as needed, wearing gloves to avoid staining.
If you want your clay to be a single solid color, dyeing it with pigment before it dries will get you the results you need. There are many options for pre-coloring air dry clay, so feel free to experiment! Acrylic, tempera, or poster paints will give you a solid bright color.
If you want a deep, vivid color, try artists' quality acrylic or oil paint. Food coloring or icing coloring will give similar results as acrylic and tempera. If you want a pastel or very light color, try pastel chalk. You can also buy readymade clay colorants, but they come in limited colors and can be expensive.
You could try adding a considerable amount of acrylic pigment powder to color your clay. It might be easier to mix a tiny bit of water into the powder first rather try to add it completely dry. A highly pigmented ink might also work.
You can purchase powdered or pre-mixed pigments or make your own using colored pencils or chalk shavings. Both pigments and dyes can be used to color either white or translucent polymer clay.
The acidity of the vinegar breaks down the clay a bit, and makes it sticky.
Painting is the most common way to decorate air dry clay sculpture. and acrylic is probably the most popular. It's no surprise why: it's inexpensive, quick-drying, and versatile. It's also forgiving because you can easily paint over mistakes.
You can also apply alcohol inks to ready and unbaked polymer clay crafts.
One way to seal air dry clay is by using a craft glue like Mod Podge or PVA Glue. This method is simple and easy, and all you need to do is brush a coat of the glue over the surface of your pieces. Plus it's non-toxic and once it dries, it will be sealed and give your creations a water resistant layer.

Air-dry clay's main disadvantages are its fragility and brittleness (especially thin parts), lack of waterproofing, long drying times that can cause cracking, and its non-food-safe nature, requiring sealants for any functional use. It's prone to shrinkage, can get messy with water, and doesn't achieve the hardness or detail of kiln-fired clay, making it better for decorative rather than durable, functional items.
The best paints to use on air dry clay are acrylic paints. Small bottles or tubes of acrylic paint can be purchased cheaply in a huge array of colours. They're also available in metallic finishes.
You can color any clay body whether it is wet or dry.
If you'd like to add even more flair to your decorations, consider coloring your modeling chocolate. Here, we use natural food coloring in a gel form so that it blends into the modeling chocolate easily.
Use good acrylic paints or watercolor paints. Let the first layer of paint dry before moving to the next paint layer. Finally protect your painted clay model with a thin layer of clear nail polish for small item, spray varnish or modpodge. Have fun!
Does Air-Dry Clay Need to Be Sealed? Unlike kiln-fired ceramics, air-dry clay remains porous even after drying. If exposed to water, it can soften, crack, or completely disintegrate. Sealing is crucial to protect your pieces from humidity, spills, and outdoor conditions.
2️⃣ Prime if you want crisp colours – A coat of white acrylic or gesso makes everything pop. 3️⃣ Use acrylic paint – It stick beautifully to the clay and dries quickly, great for lots of layers! 4️⃣ Seal your masterpiece – A matte or gloss varnish will protect it for the long run.
Why I don't recommend this polymer clay: The colors aren't very appealing straight from the package, and they don't improve much when they're mixed. I have heard many stories about its pungent smell, and I would have to agree.
Even when dry, the air-dry clay remains prone to dents and scratches. To strengthen its surface, coat it with a few layers of primer. It works wonders forming a smooth and sturdy exterior. Unfortunately, most good-quality primers come in grey color, so it can be harder to paint the surface later.
When we mix all primary colors (Blue, Magenta, Yellow) together, we get black (in ideal conditions). We will deal with subtractive mixing within polymer clay.
1) Cut off a chunk of clay from a slab or pull apart the amount you need. 2) Knead the clay to make sure it's pliable. 3) Choose your paint colours (this is the fun part), then add a small amount of paint into the clay. 4) Knead the clay until the paint's mixed in.

You really can't go wrong by simply using the most affordable paint around to get that touch of color on clay. Give it a gloss by putting a coat of Mod Podge on top.
