Dogs bark at people for a variety of different reasons, whether because they are excited, frustrated that they can't greet the person, or even worried or uncomfortable about another's presence. If your dog is barking while in your front yard, they may feel protective of their home or be warning others to stay away.
If you begin to see that your dog is barking to get your attention, a good technique is to simply turn your back and ignore them. Make sure you aren't rewarding the dog for being noisy by giving any attention, don't talk to them, don't touch them, don't even look at them.
Don't Respond to Barking Dogs
Many dogs will bark to get your attention, ask for food, or to tell you to open the door or let them out of the crate. Don't respond. Wait until your dog is quiet to give them what they want.
No scolding, no yelling, and no physical punishment. Gently take hold of her collar, lead her to a quiet room away from the action, and leave her there with a bowl of water and a chew toy. Your visitor may expect you to punish your dog, even “alpha roll” her, if he's watched a certain television show.
This is well-intended but incomplete advice – if you only ignore the behavior, your dog will probably never learn to stop barking, jumping, or pulling. Just ignoring unwanted dog behaviors misses an important piece of teaching your dog what TO do instead. Dogs learn by association.
Often times, dogs that did not have a lot of human interaction and attention as a puppy will bark at other humans because they aren't as familiar with how to act around them and don't have an established background of trust.
The barking and lunging is a result of that fear/frustration; when we tell him no or otherwise stop that behavior from happening, we are not teaching him that he should not be fearful/frustrated but rather than he should not express his fear/frustration through that behavior.

The first thing to remember if a dog charges you is to remain calm. Do not scream, and do not try to hit, kick or show aggression to the dog. If you are walking or running, stop and either turn sideways or slowly back away.

New Scientist describes a study that investigated the reactions of dogs to people who either helped or refused to help their owners. The researchers found that the dogs could pick out antisocial behavior and were more likely to socially exclude or react unfavorably toward the perpetrator.
