To show your rat you love him, use actions like gentle handling, offering favorite treats (sunflower seeds, peas), spending quality time (letting him explore your shoulder or hoodie), and using a soothing voice to talk or sing, as rats understand affection through consistent positive experiences, grooming, and quiet presence, not words. Look for signs he loves you back, like bruxing (teeth grinding), boggling (eye vibrating), licking you, or snuggling into your hoodie.
All rats naturally love to burrow, so providing them with a place to hide while in your arms gives them a reason to snuggle up close to you. Regularly talking to your rats while they are in their cage is also very helpful. It gets them used to your voice, while allowing them to stay safe in their beds.
They aren't super complex animals so they certainly don't understand "love" in the way we might express love to a pet, but they certainly understand basic symbiotic social relationships and they definitely establish them with their owners.

If you do make contact, wash the affected body part thoroughly with soap and water. To clean areas where rats may have been, use one part household bleach and 10 parts water, which kills the leptospirosis bacteria. Wear gloves and goggles.
Rats will not usually pine away and die simply from being kept alone - so if you are concerned simply with what rats need to stay alive, you can keep them alone. However, it is not fair to think only of what our pets need to keep them alive. We should also think about what they want to give them happy lives.

Grieving in Rats
A grieving rat may eat less, appear depressed, or become restless. Lack of appetite, depression or lethargy may be symptoms of a secondary bacterial infection triggered by the stress of the loss, so rats with these signs should be treated with an antibiotic just in case.
Quivering/Vibrating
This behaviour is literally the rats feeling something too intensely for them to express. It can be a sign of nerves, but can also be a sign of intense excitement or apprehension.

Rats make lifelong bonds with their owners.
Ask any rat owner, and he or she will tell you: Rats recognize their owners and respond to their sight and voice. They are very social and love to hang out with human family members on the couch or on peoples' shoulders or in their laps.
Some rats love to play-wrestle with humans, and may get into it by going for the kill with their teeth. They know they are playing, so these are usually excessively gentle little bites--they want you to play along and have fun, too, so they aren't going to bite hard enough to deter you!
A "silent killer" animal can refer to predators with stealthy hunting methods, like the owl, leopard, or python, but also to venomous or disease-carrying creatures such as the venomous, yet cute, slow loris, the camouflaged stonefish, the fast-acting common krait snake, or even the microscopic mosquito, which transmits deadly diseases like malaria and West Nile virus, making it the world's deadliest "silent killer" overall.

Rats Recognize People
Over the years and many, many rats later, I have continued to witness their ability to recognize and favor their humans.
While it's not a foolproof method, observing the rat's front incisors indicates a rat's age when wondering how old is my rat. Younger rat tooth coloration will be a pale yellow shade. As rats age, their tooth color will darken. In adult rats, the most common tooth color is dark yellow.
Rats leave droppings in areas they feel safe, so droppings are often 'grouped' in hidden areas. On average rats produce 40 droppings per day.
No, rats can't live alone.
Although they enjoy human company, they also need a rat companion (or two) to stay happy and healthy. A pair or small group is the best option and groups should be same sex (unless neutered) to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
The risk of infection from pet rodents is generally low. Remember to keep your pet rodent in a separate part of the home and ask another family member or friend to clean the cage and care for the pet. Avoid prolonged stays in the room where the rodent is kept.
