Heat usually lasts between 2-4 weeks. Early in the cycle, a female dog may not be receptive to male dogs, although some are receptive through the entire cycle. It can be shorter or longer and you'll know the cycle is over when all her vulva returns to its normal size and there's no more bleeding or discharge.
Once the bleeding stops, the second stage of the dog heat cycle, called the estrus stage, has begun. Many people make the mistake of thinking their dog's estrus is done at this point, but this second stage is actually when your dog can become pregnant.
After about 9-10 days, the bleeding will become more watery, or stop. It is at this time your female will, most likely, be at her most fertile. This proestrus stage can last as long as 20 days in some dogs. So the end of bleeding can be a more useful indicator of peak fertility.
Diestrus Stage
As diestrus takes over, the fertile part of the heat cycle comes to an end. This stage can last from 60-90 days and, at this point, the dog is no longer fertile. If the dog has been impregnated, the diestrus stage lasts from the end of the estrus until the birth of the puppies (around 60 days).
It secretes sex pheromones that attract males. Typically, oestrus lasts around 21 days, although in some cases it may be a little longer. It largely depends on the health, age and size of the female.
Whilst your instinct may be to limit your walks or pause them altogether while your dog's in heat, it's important to remember that physical exercise and outdoor playtime are still much needed. Especially given the hormonal changes that happen during heat!
From the beginning of the heat period she will be attractive to male dogs, but will usually not be receptive, or allow mating, until about 7-10 days later. The discharge will usually become less bloodstained at this time. Some females experience heavy vaginal bleeding during oestrus.

Is a Dog's First Heat Shorter? A dog's first heat is typically between two and four weeks. The RSPCA said that while the average heat cycle lasts three weeks, some dogs could come into season as early as six months old and stay in season for just two weeks.

If you take her in immediately, she can be treated with diethystilbesterol (DES) tablets for 5 days. This is the closest thing to a “morning-after pill” for dogs, but it may not even work. DES can cause serious side effects, each of which can lead to other complications.
Females may show less aggression towards dogs and humans after they're spayed. By getting your pet spayed, you can also eliminate the chances of hormonally driven defensive behavior. Female dogs will sometimes behave aggressively if other pets or people try approaching or touching their puppies.
The right time to breed your dog is when she is around two to three years old. Her body has then become fully matured to take on the full stress of pregnancy and the things that come after.

A whelping box. An absorbent material for the whelping box, such as newspapers (but these may become sodden quickly and often stay wet and cold), puppy pads, incontinence pads or vetbeds. Clean towels or paper towels to help clean up during labour. Towels for drying and cleaning up the puppies.
After a female dog has mated, you can expect changes in behavior like becoming clingy or irritable with other dogs. She may be lethargic and show signs of morning sickness. Physically, she may gain weight and have larger, discolored nipples.
It's totally normal for dogs to get stuck together after mating. It's called a “copulatory tie”. Don't do anything to try to separate the dogs, especially pull them apart by force, which could hurt them! Stay calm and wait for the dogs to unstick themselves.
If you're anything like us, you'll probably continue referring to your dog as a puppy until they're old and grey! But generally speaking, a puppy is officially considered an adult dog between the ages of 1 - 2 years, once their bones have fully developed and they've reached their final height and size.
Bloody discharge.
Most female dogs who go into heat will bleed, typically a week or so after the vulva begins to swell. Discharge can range from white to pink to deep red and bleeding will typically last for about 10 days.
In other words, if there is a large age gap between the sire and dam, you get litters full of males, while if the sire and dam are approximately equal in age you get litters containing more females.
