cramping and pain in your lower tummy. a discharge of fluid from your vagina. a discharge of tissue from your vagina. no longer experiencing the symptoms of pregnancy, such as feeling sick and breast tenderness.
In a miscarriage that happens beyond 6 weeks, more tissue will be expelled. The expelled tissue usually resemble large blood clots. Depending on the point at which the pregnancy stopped developing, the expelled tissue could range in size from as small as a pea to as big or bigger than an orange.
If you miscarry naturally, even in the early weeks of pregnancy, you are likely to have period-like cramps that can be extremely painful. This is because the uterus is tightly squeezing to push its contents out, like it does in labour – and some women do experience contractions not unlike labour.
You should go to your nearest emergency department if you have: increased bleeding, for instance soaking two pads per hour and/or passing golf ball sized clots. severe abdominal pain or shoulder pain. fever or chills.
Most miscarriages happen between 6 and 8 weeks gestation. We know that most of these occur due to a major genetic abnormality in the fetus. The sperm and the egg (which are known as gametes) each contain half the genetic material necessary for a complete person.
Signs and Symptoms of a Miscarriage
Generally speaking, if the bleeding is light and last for only a day or two, it is probably not a problem. Heavier bleeding is another matter, particularly if it is accompanied by cramping. In some cases, there may also be back pain or the passing of tissue from the vagina.
Symptoms of a miscarriage
The main sign of a miscarriage is vaginal bleeding, which may be followed by cramping and pain in your lower abdomen. If you have vaginal bleeding, contact a GP or your midwife. Most GPs can refer you to an early pregnancy unit at your local hospital straight away if necessary.
Most miscarriages - 8 out of 10 (80 percent) - happen in the first trimester before the 12th week of pregnancy. Miscarriage in the second trimester (between 13 and 19 weeks) happens in 1 to 5 in 100 (1 to 5 percent) pregnancies. Pregnancy loss that happens after 20 weeks is called stillbirth.
The most conclusive way of finding out is to have an ultrasound done by your doctor or midwife to see baby's heartbeat. I say "most" conclusive, because even with an ultrasound, if you are early in your pregnancy, it can be difficult to see or detect a heartbeat with 100% accuracy.

There is no treatment that can stop a miscarriage. If you are having a miscarriage, you have several options. As long as you do not have heavy blood loss, fever, weakness, or other signs of infection, you can let a miscarriage follow its own course. This can take several days.
About half of early miscarriages happen when the embryo does not develop properly. This often is due to an abnormal number of chromosomes. Chromosomes are in each cell of the body and carry the blueprints (genes) for how people develop and function.
The risk of miscarriage also decreases significantly—to about 5 percent—after your doctor detects a heartbeat. This typically occurs at around your 6 to 8 week mark. The chances of having a second miscarriage after a woman has already experienced one is also very slim at less than 3 percent.
While it's true that a loss of pregnancy symptoms can happen with a miscarriage, it's also true that symptoms can fluctuate in a normal pregnancy. If your symptoms disappear entirely before the end of the first trimester, it isn't necessarily a sign of miscarriage, but do tell your physician to be on the safe side.
The sudden disappearance of pregnancy symptoms like nausea or cravings can also sometimes be a sign of miscarriage. But this doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem. Some women don't get many pregnancy symptoms anyway.
A lack of morning sickness is not a symptom of miscarriage or a sign of increased risk. However, if morning sickness and other symptoms of pregnancy suddenly go away, this could be a sign of pregnancy loss.
Threatened Miscarriage: Some degree of early pregnancy uterine bleeding accompanied by cramping or lower backache. The cervix remains closed. This bleeding is often the result of implantation. Inevitable or Incomplete Miscarriage: Abdominal or back pain accompanied by bleeding with an open cervix.
We know that miscarriages occur in at least 15% of confirmed pregnancies. The actual miscarriage rate is likely to be much higher – we estimate it to be around 1 in 4 pregnancies. Based on these rates and the number of births each year, we estimate around 285 miscarriages occur every day in Australia.

Miscarriage blood can vary between dark brown and grainy (similar to coffee grounds) to bright red. If you miscarry in the time up to 8 weeks, it's more likely for a miscarriage to seem like a much heavier than usual period.
Here's the good news: According to a study, after an ultrasound confirms baby's heartbeat at eight weeks, the risk of miscarriage is about 3 percent.
