It's safe to say that Nutella in France is the same as peanut butter in the United States: a staple. One of the most popular ways to enjoy Nutella is for breakfast. The idea is to toast bread, spread Nutella on it, and dip it into milk, either cold or hot.
While most of the world loves Nutella, France is particularly keen on it. The country reportedly eats a quarter of all the pots that are produced.
As mentioned by other people, at least in France, Nutella is generally eaten at breakfast or as a snack ("goûter" in France), and of course in crêpes.
Both Serious Eats and Jim Webster of The Washington Post contend that the European version of Nutella is less sweet and has more hazelnuts. Webster writes that when a scoop of each is taken from the jar, the European version is firmer compared to the American version.
Yet, somewhat contradictorily (and unlike the banana and Nutella sandwich, below), eating Nutella plain on untoasted white sliced creates a juvenile, sweet, gummy mouthful that quickly gets nauseating. Toasted white bread is much better. Toasting dials down the bread's sweetness, gives it a tempering, savoury edge.
There are endless ways to enjoy Nutella, but some of our favorites include on toast, in oatmeal, as a dip for fresh fruit, and in crepes.
