The study is the first to link sleep problems to altered brain development in infants later diagnosed with autism. Sleep difficulties are common in autistic children: Nearly 80 percent of autistic preschoolers have trouble sleeping2.
Early signs of autism in babies (6 months to one year) may include: Reacting in an unexpected way to new faces. Rarely smiling in social situations. Making little or no eye contact.
People with autism tend to have insomnia: It takes them an average of 11 minutes longer than typical people to fall asleep, and many wake up frequently during the night. Some people with the condition have sleep apnea, a condition that causes them to stop breathing several times during the night.
Babies later diagnosed with autism are slower to start babbling and do less of it once they get started than typical babies do, reports a study published 31 January in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. Because delays in babbling are rare, this could serve as an early marker of autism.
Autistic children can have particular sleep and settling difficulties, including: irregular sleeping and waking patterns – for example, lying awake until very late or waking very early in the morning. sleeping much less than expected for their age, or being awake for more than an hour during the night.

At both ages, those in the autism and disability groups are more likely than the controls to transition quickly from whimpering to intense crying. This suggests that the children have trouble managing their emotions, the researchers say.
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have been found to demonstrate lower levels of social smiling than typically developing children and children with other developmental disorders (Dawson, Hill, Spencer, Galbert, & Watson, 1990; Kasari, Sigman, Mundy, & Yirmiya, 1990; Wetherby, Prizant, & Hutchinson, 1998).
Young children may express more voiced than unvoiced laughter, as they haven't yet learned to purposely laugh. The test group of autistic children laughed just about as often as the non-autistic kids, but the autistic children's laughter was 98 percent voiced, while non-autistic children produced both types.

Characteristics of Mild Autism
Repetitive or fixated behaviors, interests, or activities: Autistic people often repeat movements or words as a way to self-regulate, a behavior often referred to as “stimming.” They may also adhere to specific routines and have specific and intense interests.
Many autistic children find it hard to get to sleep, or wake up several times during the night. This may be because of: anxiety. sensitivity to the light from smartphones or tablets.
Parents of babies later diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder report more difficulties with breastfeeding, even though the causes aren't always clear until later on.
Some children with autism have severe cognitive delays, behavioral challenges, or physical "stims" (rocking or flapping) that make it obvious that something is wrong. But many autistic children have few or mild delays, challenges, or stims. When that's the case, developmental delays may be hard to spot.
Early diagnosis and intervention is most helpful and can improve behavior, skills and language development. However, intervention is helpful at any age. Though children usually don't outgrow autism spectrum disorder symptoms, they may learn to function well.
Children with autism usually experience developmental delays in one or more areas, but not every child who experiences a delay in their development has autism. When autism or other developmental disorders are diagnosed at a young age, early intervention can greatly improve your child's development.
Those who may be on the autism spectrum will mostly avoid any type of eye contact and will typically not smile or exhibit many facial expressions. Autistic children will also likely not be reactive to loud sounds and noises as neurotypical children would.
In the case of vocal stimming (or verbal stimming), the child might make noises such as groaning, grunting, high- pitched screeching, squealing, humming, or repeating random words, words to a familiar song, phrases, or lines from a movie.
Children with ASD may have difficulty developing language skills and understanding what others say to them. They also often have difficulty communicating nonverbally, such as through hand gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions.
