He called himself "Zodiac" in his fourth letter to the press on August 7, 1969. In it, he wrote: "Dear Editor This is the Zodiac speaking." From then on the press called him the 'Zodiac Killer' - but it is not known why the killer gave himself that name.
Why is the Zodiac Killer called the Zodiac Killer? 'Zodiac' is a self-given name. The notorious serial killer began contacting the press in 1969, sending now-famous ciphers to local newspapers, accompanied by letters to the editor claiming responsibility for various murders and threatening more.
He actually gave himself the title “Zodiac” in the cryptic letters he sent to the press during his murder spree. The letters often began with the words “This is the Zodiac speaking,” and contained various cryptograms and taunts alluding to his planned murders. In all, the Zodiac Killer claimed to have committed 37 murders, but has never been identified and is officially tied to six murders.
Case Breakers in 2021 said it had identified Poste, who died in 2018, as the killer who referred to himself as Zodiac and taunted authorities with ciphers in letters sent to detectives and the media. The killer terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area and killed five people in the Bay Area in 1968 and 1969.
Whether it was Gary Francis Poste or not, one thing that is clear according to the authorities is that the Zodiac killer would now be around 90 years old.
There's no clear-cut DNA evidence
But detectives aren't as lucky with Zodiac. Most of his murders involved him shooting the victim and running away. The only crime scene where he had extended contact with his victims was at Lake Berryessa.
The FBI has consistently rejected reports and conclusions that the case has been solved and told Fox News Digital in October 2021 that the case was still open.

The letters stopped in 1974. In that final letter, the writer stated that he had recently seen “The Exorcist” and thought it was the “best satirical comedy that (he had) ever seen.” He ended the note with a tally of the murders he claimed he'd committed.
Gwennie, a neighbor child who was babysat by Gary and his wife in 1970 claimed him to be the Zodiac killer in 2021. Gary has a son who got married to Michelle. In 2016 February 22, Gary was arrested for assaulting and injuring Mary and was charged with one count of corporal injury to a spouse.
