On 27 July 1890, he walked into a wheatfield and shot himself in the chest with a pistol. The wounded artist staggered back to his room at the Auberge Ravoux. Theo rushed from Paris to Auvers and was present when his brother died of his injuries on 29 July. Vincent was buried at Auvers on 30 July 1890.
The circumstances in which Van Gogh cut off his ear are not exactly known, but many experts believe that it was following a furious row with Gauguin at the Yellow House. Afterwards, Van Gogh allegedly packaged up the ear and gave it to a prostitute in a nearby brothel. He was then admitted to a hospital in Arles.
Van Gogh died in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, in 1890 aged 37. The Dutch master had been staying at the Auberge Ravoux inn from where he would walk to local wheat fields to paint. It has long been thought that he shot himself in a wheat field before returning to the inn where he later died.
Van Gogh's art became astoundingly popular after his death, especially in the late 20th century, when his work sold for record-breaking sums at auctions around the world and was featured in blockbuster touring exhibitions.
The discovery that he had ingested leaded oil paints prompted research that revealed his exposure to additional sources of lead and other toxic substances for 13 years before death.

Tragically, he took his own life
After leaving the asylum, van Gogh moved to Auvers, a village near Paris, to be closer to his brother Theo. But his mental health continued to deteriorate and, on July 29, 1890, he shot himself in the chest.

He never married or had children.
Next, he became involved with a woman named Sien Hoornik, a former prostitute who served as his model and also had young children. Van Gogh's family disapproved of Hoornik and the relationship eventually ended.

The Starry Night painting has been highly esteemed for decades and its value has reached $100 million, following its $50 million sale in 1990. The painting has fetched high prices in the past, with numerous auction house sales reaching millions of dollars.
Van Gogh's struggles with mental illness were only compounded by his financial difficulties. He was unable to make a living from his art, and was forced to rely on the support of his brother, Theo. This reliance on his brother put a strain on their relationship, and Van Gogh often felt guilty for being a burden.
On July 27, 1890, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh shot himself with a 7mm revolver in Auvers-sur-Oise, a village less than an hour north of Paris. He died two days later, at age 37.
Van Gogh died in Auvers-sur-Oise on 29 July 1890. He is buried in the municipal cemetery next to his brother Theo.
Theo suffered from dementia paralytica, now understood as late-stage neurosyphilis, and his health declined rapidly after Vincent's death. Weak and unable to come to terms with Vincent's absence, he died six months later (25 January 1891) at age 33 in Den Dolder.

The Van Gogh Museum
Following Jo's death in 1925 Vincent and Theo's art collection passed to her son, the engineer Vincent Willem van Gogh, who loaned his uncle's paintings to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1930.
Josien and Sylvia are the granddaughters of Willem, great-grandchildren of Theo and so great-grandnieces of Vincent, who shot himself in 1890. They have lived with the name all their lives so at times seem slightly blase about the family inheritance.
Struggles with his mental health led Van Gogh to admit himself to the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, located in the Romanesque monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole.
Today, Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold, and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.
