All tyres are produced with a serial Tyre Identification Number (or serial TIN) that shows the date of manufacture of a tyre. An easy way to check tread depth is to insert a 20p coin into the tread grooves on the tyre. If, once the coin has been placed, you can't see the outer band on the coin, your tyres are safely within the legal limit.
These additives come in the form of oils, detergents, waxes, antioxidants, parabens, and more, and sometimes they can "bloom" to the surface of a new tire. While some may not like the appearance, we recommend not trying to clean it.

Buying budget tyres safely
If you are opting to buy a budget tyre, then always buy from an authentic retailer and have the tyre properly fitted by a reputable garage. Some of the cheapest prices are online so ask your fitter or garage to check over the tyre thoroughly when they fit it to your car.
Changing tyres in pairs
But should tyres be replaced in pairs? The answer is ideally, yes. Replacing just the one tyre without changing the tyre on the opposite side of the axle at the same time may cause an imbalance to the vehicle – potentially leading to wheel misalignment and excessive tyre wear.
It's not recommended that you have different tire brands on your vehicle. We recommend installing the same tires to each wheel position on your vehicle for optimum safety and performance. The front and rear tires should have the same brand, size, tread pattern, load index, and speed rating.
Tyres will generally last an average of 40,000km, although this can vary widely depending on quality of road surfaces and your driving style. They should be checked annually once they reach the 5-year mark, and should be replaced every 10 years at the very least.
A general recommendation is that your tyres are changed every 20,000 miles or every 10 years. However, they may need to be changed sooner than this if you notice any of the following: The tread is worn down. Cracks in the rubber.
On average, people drive between 12,000 to 15,000 miles a year, which means the average good quality all-season tire will last somewhere between three and five years, depending on maintenance, driving style and conditions, etc.
Every tire has a birth date—the day it was manufactured—and an expiration date that is six years from that manufacture date. Most automobile manufacturers warn drivers to replace vehicle tires after six years. To wait any longer than that is a gamble with tire integrity and is risky for drivers.
All tyres (including spare tyres) more than ten years old should be removed from service and replaced with new tyres.
It's also worth remembering that although it's not illegal to have tyres that are 10 years or older, if they have significant cracks in the sidewall, then they are considered to be illegal. Any damage such as cracks or bulges in the sidewall will result in an MOT failure.
Check the tread indicators
Small bars of rubber running across the grooves in between the tread – called tread wear indicators – tell you when the tyre is worn out. If the tread is worn down to these bars on any part of the tyre, it's worn out, unroadworthy, and needs to be replaced.
