We can reduce our individual carbon footprints. One person can make a difference. Embrace renewable energy, eat less meat, drive and fly less, reduce waste, talk to others. Don't invest with banks and funds that support fossil fuels.
Australia's climate change commitments include: The Paris Agreement. Australia submitted its revised National Determined Contribution (NDC) to the UNFCCC in June 2022. This included: • Reaffirming a target of net zero emissions by 2050. Committing to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions by 43% from 2005 levels.
Overview. Australia still has a lot of work to do to address its climate policies: it is not on track to meet its renewables target; its flagship industrial emissions policy allows more fossil fuel emissions, and its support for the fossil fuel industry – especially exports – remains unwavering.
What Are the Solutions to Climate Change?
The mobile-friendly MyClimate 2050 tool shows almost all areas across Australia will experience longer and hotter summers, with temperatures increasing by an average of 2.32°C.
Recent research found much of northern Australia could experience unliveable conditions if global temperatures increased by about 3C, which could become a reality within 40 years, Dr Howey told the conference. Such extreme conditions were found in 0.8 per cent of the planet, mostly in the Sahara Desert.
Australia has been near the forefront in increasing longevity; in 1970 a 60-year old Australian male had only a 29% chance of reaching their 80th birthday but today they have a 68% chance.
In its 2022 report, the IPCC estimated that humanity could only emit 500 billion more tonnes of CO2 from the start of 2020 onwards for a 50% chance of keeping warming to 1.5C. As a result, the remaining carbon budget would be exhausted “in a little more than three years if global CO2 emissions remain at 2024 levels.”
Her private jet usage amounted to an estimated 8,300 tonnes of carbon emissions in 2022 – that's about 1,800 times the average human's annual emissions, or 576 times that of the average American and about 1,000 times that of the average European.
Carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases are the main drivers of global warming. While climate change cannot be stopped, it can be slowed. To avoid the worst consequences of climate change, we'll need to reach “net zero” carbon emissions by 2050 or sooner.
On average, Australia is “greener” today than it was two decades ago. This is despite ongoing land clearing, urbanisation and the recent droughts in some parts of the country. However, the increase in vegetation has not been uniform.
The following countries are likely to be resilient, as in being least affected by climate change in the coming years: New Zealand. Finland. Denmark.
The Australian Government is implementing a wide range of climate change policies and programs. They will grow Australia's economy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions across parts of the economy and help us adapt to climate impacts. Now and into the future, these will keep our: economy prosperous.
Actions for a healthy planet
Limiting warming to 1.5°C implies reaching net zero CO2 emissions globally around 2050 and concurrent deep reductions in emissions of non-CO2 forcers, particularly methane (high confidence).
According to a digital sustainability consultancy, Yard, Taylor Swift is the world's most carbon polluting celebrity due to her footprint in 2022. She is followed by Floyd Mayweather and Jay-Z. The study revealed that only 15% of the population takes 70% of the flights annually.
If we calculate based on CO2 emissions from aviation fuel of 3.15 grams per 1 gram of fuel, this means we arrive at a figure of 115 gm per passenger km. Since these planes cruise at approximately 780 km per hour, we can conclude a figure of 90 kg CO2 per hour.
Burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests and farming livestock are increasingly influencing the climate and the earth's temperature. This adds enormous amounts of greenhouse gases to those naturally occurring in the atmosphere, increasing the greenhouse effect and global warming.
The Science Is Clear
It will never be too late to take meaningful action to protect people and the planet. However, decades of increasing carbon emissions from oil, gas and coal are harming the natural and social systems upon which all humanity depends, threatening devastation.
All of the top 10 warmest years have happened in the past two decades. With a mean temperature of 10.09C, 2025 now tops the list, with 2022 and 2023 the second and third warmest years since records began in 1884. It was only the second time since the 19th century that the mean temperature exceeded 10C.
This will destabilize the climate and lead to a surge in heatwaves, which are expected to affect nearly everyone on Earth – some 9.2 billion people – by 2050. Almost no corner of the planet will remain untouched by extreme heat.
Only around 3.1 per cent of households have very high total balances of over $2 million. Around 1.4 per cent or 142,000 households have more than $3 million in superannuation.
However, according to a Finnish study on the impact of chronic stress on life expectancy, stress can reduce a person's lifespan by about 2.8 years. This number is based on several factors, such as a person's stress levels, how the body responds to stress and other health-related behaviors.
For example, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) groups people into population age cohorts, and differentiates between '15–64', '65 years and over' and '85 years and over'. People over 65 are generally classified as 'older' for ABS purposes.
