While glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive cancer with poor prognosis, extremely rare cases of long-term survival (10+ years) and apparent "cures" (no recurrence) exist, challenging statistics and offering hope, often linked to young age, complete surgery, specific tumor genetics (like IDH mutation/MGMT methylation), and innovative treatments. These "exceptional responders" are studied to understand why they defy the typical 12-18 month survival, but full recovery (no cancer ever returning) remains a medical anomaly.
Fear of cancer recurrence is a common experience for people living with brain tumors, particularly for patients with glioblastoma. According to an article in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, “most GBM recurs in 6-9 months.”
There are some exceptional cases when people have survived decades after surgical removal of a glioblastoma without any recurrence. We report a case of a 44 year-old man operated for a glioblastoma. 22 years after surgery the patient has no recurrence of the tumor.
